Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

By the way do you know a good knife fight scene I can read or watchThe end of "Dune" between Paul Atredies and Fayd(sp) Harkonnen.(The Dino de Laurentis version). I've never read the book, so I don't know if that fight even happens in it.

Hair: wooooo, great pic, that is a nice bow. Can't say I've ever seen that type of knife. Handle is odd, but who's to say.
Was rereading TTT, I noticed that the Uruk Hai in it were carry Yew Longbows, specifically. Don't know how I missed it the first 12 times but I did. I am surprised the yew didn't self immolate, that noblest of bow woods.
Actually, it would have been the bow that JRRT would have been most familiar with. When describing the Rohimm he only mentioned 'short bows', which would be appropriate for mounted troops.

300WW: That scene from Raiders always cracks me up, I loved it.
"never bring a knife to a gun fight"
Okay James Coburn did it in the Magnificent 7 but usually not appropriate.

I have to watch TTT closer, I have a feeling that is the bow carried by the elves that come to Helm's Deep. I shall look for the knife.
It looks like a pretty wicked double-handed kind a knife/sword, eh?

LOTR on tape?
To: HairOfTheDog
I gotta get one of those!

Now that's a knife!Looks more like the size of a wakizashi to me, but with a four-hand handle. It looks neat, and artsy, but it's too long for a knife, and too short for much of a sword.
OTOH, my motto is "always bring a gun to a knife fight", so what do I know?
I think the knife fight at the end of "Dune" is a good example of a stylized fight. Street fighting would involve biting, kicking, and gouging, too. While it might seem like a good idea to run the guy through, slitting him open in several places seems to be the general goal.
Also, the type of knife determines the style, to a great extent. A straight razor is used differently than a cooking knife, dagger, tanto, or other kind of fighting knife. It all depends on how much sweep in in the blade, and the type of point. Butter knives, for example, are a poor choice for stabbing. The tanto, however, is good if armor is expected.
Remember, I'm no expert at knives beyond pocket knives. This is just stuff I've picked up by osmosis over the years.

The Elves in the Prologue of LOTR:FOTR use a similar long-handled/short-bladed kind of knife/sword. There's the scene where the line of Elves is being charged by Sauron's horde, and the Elves make a timed sword-cut that ripples along the battleline, cutting the Orcs as they arrive.

(Kinda cool... don't know how functional that sword would be in reality though.)
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
I thought it looked functional.... and you are right.... It is in the prologue!
