The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I love fried chicken livers. I don't like any other part of the chicken but I love livers.

Okay, quick garden questions.

Well Corin. The ideal gardener would put 'em in the ground I guess. I ain't ideal.

Gotta have a place for the mint where it won't overtake the state though. Or just keep it mowed or dug out. I don't have a problem with it but lots of people don't like its invasiveness.

I'd ask OT where she would suggest putting the lemon balm as she is close to you and probably close to your zone. To get mine growing in the hot dry Texas heat I had to put mine where it's in the shade most of the day and has a drip on it all day long.

For the lavendar the big thing is someplace that will drain well. So, not near your swamp. It will die if it's roots stay too damp. But, then you gotta water it too. It likes to be watered and but then not have to soak in the water it seems.

All that said. I've got some of all these items in pots as well. I haven't been able to get lavendar to grow successfully in the ground here so I have 2 pots. And this stuff in pots does okay as long as I water. If it's a pot you want for decorative purposes then keep it here. In addition to my mint in the ground I also have 4 pots of different varieties that I have kept for 2 to 4 years now. I just bring 'em in the house in the winter and make sure I soak them every day or twice a day in July and August.

I saw We Were Soldiers last night. Awesome movie.

I loved that movie. I only rented video so didn't see the extra stuff but it rang so true because of all the things that lined up with my s-i-l's mindset and speech. There is no doubt when you talk to him that all he is doing is for his fellow soldiers. humbling.

Outstanding Flat Frodo report!!!

OT's house looks like a good place. I think she has to find another job there. It suits a good hobbit.

do you have oregano in the ground that comes back year after year?

My oregano stays green all year round...well sometimes it's greener than others. :)

I'd ask OT where she would suggest putting the lemon balm as she is close to you and probably close to your zone.

I'd put all of it in the ground. But then the longest I've kept lavender alive is two years and it wasn't exactly pretty. :)

The lemon balm dies back a bit in the winter but it comes back like a weed! Is the mint in a plastic pot? You could put it in a gallon plastic pot and put the pot in the ground. That's what you're supposed to do when you don't want it to spread so much.
