The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Didn't get much more read between doctor, nightly routine and night from hell. Hoping to make some progress today, but it seems it will be slow going. The kids are not cooperating; naps seem to be very rare today.

lo and behold a bunch of carpenter ants had made a nest in the insulation

Good thing you got em! SSQ had to take off the siding and cut part of the back wall of our kitchen out once to get at an ant nest!

The last time, he just gassed em with CO2. Looks like we're going to have to do a repeat performance because they're starting up again. Oh well, last time they were gone for two years, so we'll just hit em again, HARDER! We'll do several walls this time cause we've seen them in the basement, the kitchen and the upstairs bathrooms! Nasty little boogers!

Rosie, thanks for what you said yesterday. I appreciate it:)

Corin, I am sorry I caused you tension. I thought we had things worked out. I told you last week I would scroll past your posting, and I did, you said your piece Monday. We all had an understanding. Why the tension?

Carton, my posts to you about spamming, was my attempt to try once again to have conversation with you, I was in no way trying to be a room mother. I thought a friendly warning was a nice thing to do. I said I thought the spamming as it is done on this thread was funny. I was not trying to monitor you. My motives were one of trying to get on friendly terms.

To the rest of you, I am not saying I won't post here again, There are no hard feelings on my part. But I would like to say I do feel bad about what has happened here, but I don't feel I am entirely to blame. This thread has a reputation among people that don't post here at FR. Just as The Religion Forum and The NES has. This thread's rep. is one that is a non-contraversial, friendly thread. The NES actually has been given a bad rap. It gets an "ick, sounds contentious," because things do get heated over there, and frequently, people who have never even read it assume because religion is the main topic, it is a "bad" thread full of hateful self righteous people. But the thing is, in spite of our heated discussions, disagreements, name calling, and so on and so forth, the regulars stayed friends thru it all. No one left. Now which thread would you say has the more geninune freindships? That thread welcomes newbies, let newbies come in and state their opinions just as the regulars got too.

I have cut way back posting over there not because someone said something I didn't like, we are after all suppose to be adults, but because as I said as far as religion, it has all been said numerous times, we need to leave it in God's hands. But I still read the thread everyday, I enjoy hearing about those people's lives, I still think of them as freinds, I believe they think of me the same. I asked them to pray for Devon also, and I know they will.

Last week I was surprised at some of the posts where people were being named and bashed, calling them liars and stupid, with out pinging them here to see what was being said. Is that what you call a friendly, non-controversail thread? I didn't understand how all of you can let that go on knowing the type of rep. this thread has, which is the very one you WANT it to have. I am not trying to rub salt into a wound. Really. I am saying how I feel, because the blame has been laid at my door by Corin and I feel I have a right to address it. This is not intended to be a gottcha post, it is not intended to cause more problems, it's how I feel, and what I see here. You really should not be surprised by any of the last few days given the tone of some posters vs. the rep. you are trying to convice the forum you have when new people show up.

Peace at any cost is no peace at all. That is what causes tension. When there are subjects that can't be talked about because it might upset the apple cart, because someone might leave. True freinds stay freinds in spite of differences.

Becky

I'll bring the book home and get it to you this weekend.

There are no winners in this situation, IMHO.

The blame game can go on and on, but nothing good would come of it. Besides, I figure that no one is "blameless" anyway. We all make mistakes or say something that gets misunderstood or have bad timing in our jests, etc.

All I know is that I am heartbroken over what has happened in the Hole lately and I wish that everyone would just kiss and make up so things can go back to normal.

I said before that I consider us a family, albeit a dysfunctional one. Families bicker, but when push comes to shove, they stand by each other.

That's what I love about the Hole and I refuse to take sides on this issue. I love each of you equally and no one person's friendship / feelings / presence is more valuable to me than another.

I don't like seeing us hurt each other so I refuse to participate in any bashing other than lighthearted elf-bashing. Period.

><>On Fri. evening, we saw the Broadway musical, 42nd Street, which was a REAL treat for me. ... snip ..... Tom Wopat, of "Dukes of Hazzard" fame played the producer, Julian Marsh. <><

Wopat's contract is up in August, and, coincidently, my brother (who is currently doing Julian Marsh in the Broadway TOUR) will be 'probably' taking his place. I say 'probably' because the terms of the contract aren't ironed out yet.

Looks like I'll be making another trip to NYC in the next few months ... (I was up there a few years ago when he (my brother) was doing Gaston in Beauty and the Beast) .. what a cool city to visit!

It IS a fabulous show.... oh those DANCING feet!deb

I don't think there is anyone else here who thought you were the cause of what happened yesterday, Becky. You did nothing to deserve that.

I think it is not that easy to put the thread in a box with a label on it... Because we are real people with real flaws, and good and bad patches. If it were that easy to define I wouldn't humm and stammer when trying to explain to a non FR friend what it is and why I was upset yesterday. We are a collection of the various posters in it.

Welcome Becky, to our ever-dynamic, sometimes contentious (but usually not) sometimes funny, sometimes caring, and sometimes evidently snoringly boring thread. :~D

Well said Becky.

Your "peace at any cost" line makes me think of countries. Sometimes this never-ending peace keeping between nations causes more problems than it stops. Sometimes nations just have to have a good, old fashioned rough-and-tumble. Then when the dust settles things can get going again.

Can you imagine what our relationship would be like with Japan now if we had not gone to war? We'd probably hate each other and would do our best not to deal with each other. However, we duked things out and now since the pressure is gone we are the best of friends (well, unless you count our subs accidently sinking their ships every now and then...).

We can be friends and have our occasional disagreements. Friends are friends despite their disagreements.

Where'd all that come from? Becky, it's all your fault! ;^)
