The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Had a cat once that ate slugs. Was hell getting it off his whiskers.

So, um, what do you folks do during the day? I know you talk about something... guess I'll find out tomorrow.

Hmm. Well. I don't want the kind you just posted, or the metal kind, but a few of vodka would help relax me.

Actually I'm going to watch "Terminator" in a couple minutes. It seems appropriate.

Heh....

Friend is on her way to pick up the guest dog, and the welt on his back from getting bit by the horse is barely noticeable! - Good!

She is bringing me dinner from someplace. A surprise!

Excellent!

We have a guest dog, too, courtesy of a relative who... should be taken out and shot, actually. Hopefully it's going home Wednesday. Have you ever met anyone who insists on dragging as many people down into ruin with him as possible? It's not fun to watch.

No guest dog here. I have a neighbor cat who visits sometimes.

Guest dogs are a pain.

Is it still Monday? My Mondays keep getting worse. Next Monday I expect to wake up dead.

How about a 30/30 in a scabbard on the saddle?

Obvious, and clear, yet somehow less "gun-totin'". Somewhat more practical on horseback, too, I would think. Also would take out the motor/tires/driver on a four-wheeler a little more reliably than a handgun. There's something more, uh... authoritative... about working a lever action and drawing down. Might not even have to pull the trigger. Should, of course, be ready to.

Well... sure. So would I if I was giving a piggyback ride to somebody that suddenly started shooting outta nowhere.

Has Bay ever been around gunshots? Is there desensitization training that works for that sort of thing?

When we were in NY with the Girl Scouts, we went to the Manhattan Fire house that lost the most men on 9/11. They lost 3 Captains and 12 firemen. Their pictures are on a Tribute Wall at the station.

One of the requirements for the 9/11 patch the girls were earning was to share something patriotic with someone in the city. The girls had made pins to share that had pictures of the flag, or God Bless America printed on them. Clare had also made an origami crane, so she gave that to a fireman, too. He let her climb up into the cab and put the crane on the dashboard; then the fireman showed her how and let her start the truck! We had brought them several boxes of Girl Scout cookies, and when we left, they were headed back to make a fresh pot of coffee to have with them!

I didn't know until later in the day that they sold patches for their station. It is at the corner of 48th St. and 8th Ave, which is still considered 'Broadway', so their motto is "Never Missed a Performance", and they have the tragedy and comedy masks above the motto. Since several of us missed the chance to get the patches, one of the ladies, whose brother works nearby is going to get them for us and send them to the girls to put on their vests.

I got some pictures of Frodo at the station.

I have ridden out of the gun club lots of times where we ride right by them.... he will startle if he didn't expect it, but he doesn't bolt.

Police horses and calvalry all have to have a lot of desensitizing training... Immersion therapy..... and it isn't that hard I imagine. A horse would certainly learn in time not to jump, would recognize the gun for what it was going to do. But you'd have to do it alot I think. Would be easier to get them to stand tied reasonably well if you are shooting from the ground than it ever would be to get them to not flinch firing from their back. Not sure how you would ever be able to hit the broad side of a barn mounted. They would be amazing to not flinch.

Legolas can.... but arrows are quiet.

Well, yeah... and so could John Wayne. His horse never seemed to have a problem with it. :-)
