The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Neither was I, which is why I was so shocked. I was stupid. Should have remembered that JK understands the primary rule of writing is "What is the worst thing I could do to the main character, short of actually killing him?"

This was the worst thing. I think this was the bottom-point of the series. The war has started, the lines are drawn and Harry knows what he's doing. But they've just lost a knight in the first round and it was over something really, really stupid. At least he died well.

I just hope that she manages to put the books out faster than one every 3 years... or she may never get to the end.

Yeah... I guess... I think it's going to take a while to digest everything in this one, though. So two years, maybe, but not three...

I'm going to bed now. See you all tomorrow.

Well she'll definitely have to speed it up so they can get the movies out. At the rate they've been going, those kids are going to be all grown in just a few years, and they'll only be on the 4th movie!

Evening all: finished up the brick threshold, tools all away, looks pretty good, heck, we do good work.

Hair; good luck on the trip into the dark lands; remember when you meet the nine, the fellowship is with you.

2JM & WN; had some strange weather up here, even strange for our neck of the woods; had 60 mph winds and baseball size hail moving our way along I-435 when it hit state line and started fizzling out. We got little wind and only enough rain to get the sidewalk under the shingle oak damp. Like I said strange weather.

'A man . . . Ain't got no hasn't got any can't really isn't any way out . . . No matter how a man alone ain't got no bloody f--ing chance.' "

Harry Morgan, dying, in "To Have and Have Not" by Hemingway. One of my favorite quotes.

Wonder where Wneighbor is too, maybe with her Mom?

Well, I'm here for a moment. Everybody else may be asleep by now. I have come home for 1, maybe 2 nights.

I spent the last 5 days 4 nights in a rehabilitation hospital with my Grama. After I posted last Wednesday morning I got a call from my mom that the hospital was kicking Grama out as insurance/medicare was finished. Grama was still gravely ill. I was going down after I got out of class Wednesday anyway. I called some prayer warriors and asked for lots of fast prayer but had to go teach class so didn't get the news posted here. I left IMMEDIATELY after class. By the time I finished the 4-1/2 hour drive my mom had found this rehab place that would take Grama.

But, the bad thing was that the rehab place is really rehab and Grama was nowhere near rehabilitation. She was still gravely ill. So, I stayed in that center with her. By the 2nd night it was pretty clear that it's about Grama's time to go. I have been ready for this. I don't like it. But, God has prepared me.

Well, I stayed with her 24 hours a day until this evening. I just drove in because I MUST work in the morning. I have made a call to my top student from last year and asked her if she could sub for me the next 3 classes. She said she would so now I just have to get my boss' approval.

The state of things - Grama's kidneys ceased functioning yesterday. (Saturday) She has been on morphine to allow her to breathe easy enough to manage since Thursday. Her attack has been congestive heart failure. Her lungs are filling up with fluid. Her legs are swelled to more than twice size. (hope i'm not too graphic for anyone) But, I know that Grama is going to be with Jesus very soon. The nurses discouraged me from coming home today because they have not expected Grama to make it this long. They were pretty sure she would not make it until dark tonight. She has... but we're waiting. My mom is with her - which is appropriate too.

I am extremely thankful that Grama has still had her full mental functions all through this. Even yesterday she had a wonderful day visiting with a brother, sister-in-law and niece who came in the morning. And then in the afternoon, Grama's sister arrived from Arizona along with a niece from Albuquerque, 2 other nephews and wives. Grama was very animated and talkative to all. She wore herself out talking and slept very well last night. This morning she simply required so much medication that it wasn't possible for her to converse. She was still able to answer for her comfort and respond to anything requiring a yes or no.

I hope you don't mind that I just jumped right in with this long abrupt update. I may not be able to post again for a few more days. If she lives through the night I may see her again tomorrow. If not, I will let you, my friends, know what is happening as I am able. (thanks in advance for the hugs i know are coming.)

Nah, I think most have just gone off to beddy bye. Welcome back, Corin. Hope the Alumni trip was a fun one.

I napped for a short time this afternoon so I decided to watch the Extended version of FoTR. The kids went on to bed a little while ago, and I was catching up before I went back to the movie. They're almost to the ferry!

We're having another thunderstorm here! At least the grass is getting a GOOD watering before I put the weed and feed stuff down!

Have a good evenin all.

I am glad you got to spend this time with Grama... That was a gift, that she could still be with you this week.... Animated and talking, amazing.
