The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Oh, you are at 37.55 degrees, maybe a little too far south to see it? I never saw them growing up there, but believe it happens occasionally in VA.

My aunt doesn't want to come because it's too hot and she doesn't feel good.

Grrrrrr....

Thank you. I am starting to feel a little better. My aunt does this to people all the time. She promises things and then when it comes time to be somewhere or do something she is sick. Sometimes she even takes herself to the emergency room. Where they generally can't find anything wrong.

Well, I'm the worst person to talk to about that because I didn't take part in any Senior year activities, including graduation. Silly hype and I can't say I missed out on much anyway.

Take a pic of Myranda in the gown to have and send to Grammy, give Myranda the $70 and take her out to dinner!

Southern state line appears to be at about 36 degrees.

Based on what I've read and heard, Hugo Weaving was a last minute choice for Elrond and he was the one who did the character wrong.

Yes, I had heard that and forgotten that. You are right. I remember hearing or reading that many of the staff were even very unhappy with Hugo's work.

Really, was Elrond in the movie anything like the Elrond you had in your imagination?

No problem! He finishes the season and then he chooses the next activity.

Tell him to choose wisely since he will be committed to it once he starts, but that he has to choose something.

Hopefully, the choice will involve less headaches for you and the Mrs.

I just got through telling her that if we'd have known it was going to turn out like this I'd have paid her $100 to skip the ceremony.

My mom and brother offered us money to elope. They didn't go high enough.

Sorry for the family woes. Looks like we'll both be dealing with cranky relatives this weekend...(or will we BE the cranky relatives....?)

My mom is like that, bless her heart.

She is the biggest hypochondriac..but only when she either a)wants attention or b) wants to get out of a commitment.

I've just stopped counting on her for anything outside of watching the kids for me while I work. Period.

Team sports are usually very good for kids, IMO, even if they don't like them. I had to play them, over my very strong objections, in school. Today I am grateful, there were benefits on more than one level that I still enjoy today.

But if the playoffs depend on him being there tonight, I don't see how he can skip it.

I didn't like my kids to not finish what they started either, and didn't let it happen without a really good reason.

Yeah, even growing up in the mountains, I don't recall ever seeing them in Virginia.

Thing that really pi$$e$ me off is that we were reluctant to sign him up for baseball because of his grades. But we thought he needed it for his self esteem. It would make our lives a lot easier if he wasn't playing. But he can't quit mid-season. Especially not now.

No, you are absolutely right, he cannot quit. I had a bit of a situation like that with my oldest daughter when she made drum major her sophomore year of high school. Halfway through football season she was ready to leave a football game and walk out on the band. I hated her being in band because I hated all the back and forth driving and being at all the stuff. BUT! That was not the time to have my no-band wish come true!!!

She completed that year and then quit band for good. Kind of sorry about that but still had to teach her to finish her committment to the other people.

Not at all. Book Elrond had class, wisdom, a sense of humor and strength (not a bully though).

Movie Elrond was Agent Smith from The Matrix!

Are you going to let (encourage?) Myranda do something ornery like put a message made out of tape on her cap? Or attach Christmas lights to the cap? Hide a helium balloon on a string under the gown and then let it 'fly' and bob about during a boring speaker. Or sneak in a beach ball, blow it up, and toss it around? Or wear crazy sneakers? Or something fun like that (after all, what are they going to do, kick her out of school?)? Still though, a moment of ritual pomp and circumstance is kind of neat. Doesn't last long and you can say you were there.

In theory, you're right. But I'm getting the story from the wife and I have no current access to Jr. Logic doesn't work with him (he's 14 and lives for the minute).

I like the way you think. She'd have probably had me sold on the idea except then she blurted out that she would still attend the graduation anyway to see her friends graduate.

*eyes rolling* I said, "If I'm going to have to drive you up here to this place and come back and get you, you are going to be walking across that stage."

(If I'd have been her I'd have said, okay, I'll get a friend to give me a ride, hand over the cash!)

Man, I just went all the way to VA to be at my god daughter's college graduation. Her parents came all the way to Miami to be at my daughter's from high school, so I couldn't and wouldn't have missed it.

But the speaker was the worst imaginable.

Corin, why don't we just take your second option and just BE the cranky relatives? I think I can handle that role much better!
