The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

He never wore them.

I'll bet he's outgrown them by now.

I honestly don't know what the other farriers in town charge.... I use Mark because he is the best one I know, and others are unreliable.

The pony is only $10 to trim barefoot... so it evens out!

OH oh. I hope we don't scare her away. It's a good thing I don't drink alcohol anymore. I'm told it makes mine worse. LOL I never thought so.

A button! No little handle that swiveled?

I hated the pre-electric typwriters. I always had to hit the keys hard and my fingers would go down in between the keys and my cuticles would get all cut up. I thanked God the day I first typed on an IBM Selectric!!

I love computers because you can edit while you type and you don't have to worry about 'whiting out' the mistakes!!

Oh, you don't get these discs at your local grocery store. I get them at a candy and cake decorating shop. They also sell them at Michael's and JoAnn Fabrics and Crafts stores. Wilton, the company that makes the cake decorating stuff makes the candy discs that are sold at the 'craft' stores. I don't know what company makes the ones I buy. They are pre-packaged at the candy making shop, but I've never noticed a manufacturer's name.

They are different from chocolate chips in that they don't seem as waxy as the chips. They melt smoothly and you put the stuff by spoonfuls into the candy molds. We made candy bars tonight, and I'm gonna make some more tomorrow along with some TROLL DOLL pops!

You know something I didn't know until recently? I used to use an old cookie recipe that was my great-Grandmothers using melted chocolate chips. When I was a kid I made these every year at Christmas as gifts and everyone loved them. As I got older I didn't make them often and it seemed like I kind of lost my touch at it. And then I found out that chocolate chips have somehow had their formula changed in the last 30 years so that they don't "melt" the same way. They melt but are designed to hold their shape so when you have chocolate chip cookies the chips will hold together. Well, that totally messed up my cookie recipe which needed melted chips. Now, I don't make them much but when I do I use plain old semi-sweet chocolate blocks. It's not as easy.

Okay, thank you. Of course now I am looking at a more serious situation. Since I have been told that I will teach this one class that messes up my idea of a quick temp job to get me through the summer. If I am going to go someplace new it will have to be for a real job prospect, not a temp thing. If I dump them on this one class I won't have ANY job in the fall.

But, I still would like to get down in the San Antonio area. Truthfully, I probably have as many or more friends in San Antonio than in Waco. And Myranda will be there for the next 4 years.

Well, you've obviously never seen computers used by Marines with white-out on the monitors. :) (Don't worry, it's on old inter-service joke, and there's plenty aimed at each branch of the military).

I went through high school typing on a high-end Remington portable, and hated it. I still have it around somewhere, and when I stumbled upon it once, I had flashbacks.

I worked all summer before starting college at $1.25 an hour (the minimum wage in those days) to afford and IBM Selectric. $460 dollars for the short-carraige model, which was all I could afford. But it saved my sanity in college.

The Selectric is still in perfect condition, and is currently on loan to an aunt who had her beloved IBM Executive stolen. She says she's finally getting used to the "newfangled" type ball.

FYI, there are over 10,000 parts to a Selectric. Most people who are experts in Selectric repair are now in retirement homes, or mental institutions.

Do I hear you are thinking about moving to San Antonio? We need to moot before you do!

Hi Hair and everyone...I'm still busy as can be preparing for my trip and big interview on Monday (and less big on Thursday). Wife is firing questions at me and I'm practicing answers over and over again (probably only a few will ever be needed...but it's good practice at being succinct...as opposed to mouth-diarreah which I can sometimes lapse into).

I'm getting better -- and more succinct -- with each practice session.

Otherwise it's just down to the little stuff. My motto for the week is "Be Brief, Dunderhead".

But I'm just too occupied in the brain to get to the Hole very often for tea and sympathy.
