The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Everyone at New Line is stunned that TTT has done 40% better (at this point anyway) than LOTR. They can't believe it because the box office numbers mean that more people have seen TTT than saw LOTR and since TTT makes no attempt to bring the audience up to speed on the story, that's really remarkable.

I kinda thought more people were going back to see it a second time because TTT is so much more complex and jam-packed with story. I'm sure their research dept. will be all over this trying to figure it out. It's pretty neat though.

Evenin' folks, had some outstanding luck at the Video Store; scored the 1 (one) copy of LOTR-VHS-E; whooboy, been waiting to see it.

Susan is going to grill up some portabello mushrooms, to accompany to pasta florintine. One happy camper here.

It's a bit too warm for a fire though, 57 degrees in January is definitely not normal OT, but it can happen. Lots of time yet for a big one.

Will be checking later, guess in about 4 hours. Have it for a week, unless I start to feel guilty about keeping some other frugal ranger or hobbit or dwarf or elf or ent or.. from seeing it. Hey, it could happen. :-)

Has anyone heard how much they spent advertizing/promoting TTT? I didn't hear about Burger King action figures (or whatever) and haven't really seen that many commercials for it.

Pretty amazing that it's doing so well.

It'll be interesting to see, but I'd guess this is a very different thing than Star Trek. Star Trek was a TV series, not three movies, and in movies being identified with a giga-hit doesn't type-cast you as much as a TV series does (I'm thinking Harrison Ford in Star Wars). It's not quite the same as being in everyone's living room in a particular part on a weekly basis, year after year.

I really liked Discs 3 & 4 much more than I thought I would, and I'm really glad I saw them and have them. I liked the documentaries on color & light and sound -- and the one on the third disc where they showed how they created Hobbiton, which even got heavily into horticulture! And seeing what John Rhys-Davies had to go through with prosthetics...wow!

My wife was fascinated with the tricks of perspective (sizing between hobbits, dwarfs and men and elves) -- moving scenes on tracks to maintain the perspective trick even with the camera moving in a circle, and making two separate Bag-ends, one for Gandalf and one for Hobbits. Amazing stuff.

I think a lot of the props will stay in New Zealand, they're doing tourist trips now of the areas and sets where the movie was filmed.

No doubt more people are going back to see it a second or third time sooner than they did for LOTR. But I don't know if that could bring about a 40% jump.

I suspect people who didn't see LOTR the first time, but heard the hype later, decided to see TTT right away. That will mean increased video sales later, as they buy the first movie to see what they missed in the theaters.

Yes, again, and yes, I know. The last time was around the time we were dealing with my f-i-l so we just got it filled. Setting up a contract with the oil company was on this month's to do list. We usually make it to February...

Probably a couple of reasons. More of us probably are seeing it a second (third, forth) time and doing it sooner. I'm hoping to go again this week.

Plus FOTR got a lot of hype when the VHS/DVD came out. So a lot of people who didn't catch it in the theater saw it that way and were ready for the next part of the story.

I'd be willing to bet numbers will be even bigger for ROTK.

I bet you're right. ROTK will blow the numbers out of the water. People are going to be just dying to see the end.

I, on the other hand, know the ending is going to be sad and although I'm looking forward to seeing it, I dread it in a way. I can't even read the ROTR without getting teary-eyed.

I think the 40% increase is due to the release of the DVD in August. A lot of folks who weren't interested enough to see in the theater were very interested after that, maybe.

Yeah, what she said! lol, sorry I did not read further.

Can you guys help out on me finding good pics of Legolas. My daughter and niece are asking me, saying they are not happy with what they have found so far. Got any good ones?

Also, I went last night and saw the ad for Pirates of the Carribean. It looks good to me.

I dunno where he is....Vim? VIM? Where are you?

I'm in and out sporadically, here and there. Been having a hard time checking in regularly lately. (Hmmmm, a regularity problem? Maybe I should go commiserate with Elrond)....

I will go vote at the other site. Right now I am thinking I would like to come, at least for a couple of days, maybe with my son. But honestly I don't know if I will be able to do it until we get a few months closer to the actual time...

Got a huge kick out of seeing your pic from your Christmas play.... Too bad it wouldn't let me cut and paste it or you would have seen it again by now ;^) You are a stout dwarf indeed, Master Corin!

But I think the make-up people overdid the white hair in your beard...you might want to have them check that next year...

Hey Vim! So nice to see you!

Glen is gone for the evening (band practice), Becky is absorbed in her cartoons and Alyson is asleep (for the moment - her teething has made her miserable and she gets up 3+ times a night screaming, poor thing).

As everyone can see, my computer is up and running - better than ever! My sister installed Windows 2000 Professional, so it's the same as I have at work. I'm pleased as punch! :)

I wasn't paying attention to your area of the country; did y'all get any of the action from the lastest snowstorm? It started snowing at a good clip about 2:30 yesterday afternoon and literally snowed all night. We had about 4 inches about 10 last night when we went out walking in it, and woke up to about 12-14 inches this morning! SSQ had forgotten to get some more gas for the snow thrower, but at least got half of the driveway done, and will wait on the rest until we go out and get the gas. The kids and I shoveled the front walk and the stoop, and they went around knocking snow off the rhodies in the front, and off the branches of our big tree in the back that we decorated with Christmas lights. We didn't want the know to break the branches, and if left on them, it surely would! It does look beautiful, though!

Oooohhhh....it's so pretty! Here, wait. Let me put it on.

*secures clasp*

Wooooo Nellie! Is it ever heavy! And drop dead gorgeous!

Thank you ever so kindly, Master Dwarf. It's a queenly gift, no doubt about that. I shall wear it proudly. :)

*turns to elves with a smirk and a "don't you wish you were me" look*
