The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

It isn't available yet... perhaps WN will have an idea what the price would be. Plain Harleys cost most than most cars.

I think most cops would rather not deal with a guy wearin' an outfit like that.... on a bike like that.

I think many of us have become combined PJ/Shore fans....

Shore To Score King Kong
5/25/03, 6:48 pm EST - Demosthenes

According to website Music from the Movies, Howard Shore will continue to work for director Peter Jackson after completion of LoTR. Music from the Movies reports Howard as saying: "Peter has asked me to work with him on 'King Kong' and I am looking forward to our further collaboration". Thanks to Ringer Spy Arwenelf for the tip.

SQ: you may need an aerator or heater for overwintering fish; the MDC here recommends ponds be 8 feet deep to avoid freezing the fish, you may want to check with your state's conservation department on pond depth or heaters. I know stock tank heaters work for small ponds, Hair probably can fill you on that aspect better than I can.

Hair: cool chopper, tank art is quite nice; imho it's not one I'd want to ride very far with that little pad for seat. (It also needs a springer front end, right WN?)

Yeah - A floating or submerged stock tank de-icer would do the trick! They are electric, so there would be a power source needed all winter... but that could be taken out in summer.

We both placed third, so despite the weather it was a fun ride.

Congrats Becky!! That's terrific!

walking in with my kids and seeing stuff for gay pride week, Planned Parenthood displays, and stuff like that 10 feet inside the front entrance!

Thankfully, our library has never gotten into that kind of stuff! I know several people on the Library Board of Trustees and they are pretty conservative people, so that makes me feel good about the oversight of the place.

would your pond be so small that it would freeze solid? that one might be troublesome.

I guess it all depends on the location. If I could find a spot in the yard that is sunny all day, winter and summer, it might be ok. Didn't think about the latitude issue; that's a good point.

We have some friends who found a big old house on 5 acres that someone had dug a pond on. It is actually a man-made catch basin. A stream was flowing through the property, and the folks before them dug a big hole on either side of the stream in the side yard. It is great because there is always fresh water; it doesn't get stagnant. The stream flows in, mixes with the water in the pond, then continues it's flow out the other side.

Being woken at 6 on a sleep-in morning by a woodpecker banging on the wall outside the window is bad.

We had a woodpecker not too long ago that decided he liked banging on the exhaust pipes that come out of the roof of our house from the furnace in the attic. We kept hearing this dull clanging sound, and realized what it was. I bet that bird's beak hurt for a week! Metal is not as pliable as wood!

We also have carpenter bees.

Yikes, BEES? We have had trouble with carpenter ants in the past, but SSQ gassed em.

I'm currently fixing fried chicken tenders, boiled summer squash in butter, and scalloped potatoes with drop biscuits.

Just plain food is my specialty.
