The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I only dream of having the power to zot. Perhaps it is because I dream of it, that I should never have it!

As we all know from LotR, power is safe only in the hands of those who do not seek it.

Or those who are just too hunky for words.

My bunnies are sure bein' brazen! They are hopping all over the yard because the dogs (still dog-sitting friend's dog) are in.

I tried to take a picture, but the flash keeps reflecting off the window. It shouldn't need a flash. Don't know how to turn it off. Opened the door to take a picture, and the dogs ran out, bunnies back in the paddock where they are supposed to be. They are too fast for me to photograph!

Bunnies aren't bad.

You know what's bad? Woodpeckers are bad. Being woken at 6 on a sleep-in morning by a woodpecker banging on the wall outside the window is bad. Is there something to kill woodpeckers? They're worse than squirrels, I swear they are!

I know bunnies aren't bad, I love my bunnies and want to keep them safe. I don't want to see Gidget kill them.

You don't want to kill the woodpecker.

I remember having to run off a woodpecker who was really confused and tapping on the old TV antenna on top of the house.... tink!tink!tink!tink! Took him a couple days to realize he wasn't getting anywhere.

Yes, I do. They're ok in the trees. But not attacking the house. We have a lovely log home, you see. To a woodpecker...

We also have carpenter bees. They're huge and terrorize my brothers all summer.

Is there something to kill woodpeckers?

A shotgun works. :)

Back from "Outside". I need a cup of chamomille tea: I still have the urge to inflict bodily harm with a heavy duty shopping cart.

I got more impatiens to spruce up the front walk...hope the deer don't find them...and a fern in a hanging basket to give the front porch a proper Southern flavor. Neither Lowe's nor Home Depot had Homestead Purple verbena so I'll have to go back to The House and take more cuttings.

Woodpeckers get confused sometimes, if he doesn't find bugs, he'll go away. If he does find bugs, you should thank him!

What on earth is a carpenter bee?

They're giant bumblebees, sort of. Reportedly they do not sting. What they do is drill holes in logs and fill them with their larva. And buzz around protecting the hole for months. They are a nuisance.

Huh...

Don't think they are common here.

They are not well known unless you own a wooden house like we do!

Well, most of the houses here are all wood, but maybe the climate isn't right. Maybe they are here and I just haven't noticed that they are different than a bumblebee.

Maybe so! I had never heard of them, either, until they started infesting us.

The post that kills the thread should not have the word "infesting" in it.
