Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

The whole book, in my opinion, can be summed up with the verse, John 15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

They aren't very big each...two books together make a normal sized paperback.

The Hobbit also gets you used to Tolkien's writing style on a slightly easier level. I breezed right through The Hobbit in a couple of days, but be prepared to invest some time in LotR. I always find myself checking the maps and appendix while I'm reading it...it helps visualize the story a lot better.

We're going to have a second go at drivers' licenses on Saturday. My blood pressure is going up at the very thought of it.

So, the daughter in Germany just told me yesterday that I have to go to AAA and get an international driver's license before I go to Germany for the baby's birth. If I don't have it I can't drive on base. And since I'm the one carting her to the hospital for birth it would probably be better if I drive and not her.

Anybody know anything about this? Is there a test? What if I fail? Can I drive on the Autobahn with this!!!!

I never got my license in Germany, so I'm not POSITIVE on this, but as I recall, you do have to take a written test - identify European signs and all that. I'm sure they have a book to study, if so. Might even be able to get it on-line.

Heh, that's one of the things I like about reading old SF, running into unintended anachronisms.

We got our son a book of "Lucky Starr" stories, written by Isaac Asimov in the 40's or 50's. Obviously this was before they found out a lot about the makeup of the planets so the science is wrong, but the stories are supposed to be exciting nonetheless.

That's what I would do! And I may be wrong...maybe all it takes is a valid state license. Rules change all the time! But I think there was at least a signs test.

Kinda like my hair. I can live with color change as long as it stays in...

I heard that!! You and SSQ! His grandaddy had a full head of hair until his death at the age of 94! His hairline had receded somewhat, but not a egregious amount. I'm trying to get SSQ to let his grow longer and comb it straight back. We'll see.

Well, I can never figger it out, but the hairline thing is supposed to come from the mom. My mom's dad (I never met him) had a full head of hair. My dad's dad was bald, as was my uncle. My dad was only 49 when he died, but he had a full head of hair.

Most of the time, unless I'm growing it out for a role in one of our church productions, I keep mine pretty short. When I have to comb it, it's too long.

My dad would laugh at that. That's what he did up until the last few years of his life. But I was always arguing with him about my hair. In high school, mine was shoulder length, parted in the middle...the 70s...**shudder**...
