The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

What do you think we're discussing? Canterbury Tales?

Would you settle for Canterbury Tails?

Cool post.

I also loved "you're late. You look terrible!"- Definately a line written for the fans that have been in this gritty Aragorn vs. pretty boy elf debate!

Erkenbrand is the name you can't remember... he got morphed with Eomer...

Did you see the thread on the Extended DVD? There will be more time with the Ents in November. More waiting!

It sounds like AOL is the problem. AOL is notorious for changing system settings -- making it difficult for users to try other ISPs, etc.

Sis, did the recipe your mom use for her Ranger cookies have coconut in it? I found a recipe for ranger cookies in my husband's family cookbook (compiles by his aunt). They are all from Minnesota/Wisconsin, you know...so I wondered if perhaps this might have been a similar recipe.

I was pretty shocked when I found the recipe in the book and it said "Ranger Cookies"! They don't have chocolate chips in them, but could be easily added. Can you tell me more about them? Anything you remember special? Nuts or anything?

I just checked a recipe site, and all the Ranger cookie recipes have coconut in them. Can't do coconut, wouldn't be prudent!

Her ranger cookies did not have coconut in them... but they were nutty. Tasted almost like they might be good for you. She put raisens, chocolate chips, nuts, rolled oats,... all kinds of stuff in them. I am not sure it was a real recipe! - It may have just been chocolate chip cookies with "whatever else she had handy" to throw in there! :~D

2J, I am not picky about my cookies! I have not recieved the ones ecurbh sent yet, by the way. Still waiting. Hope the mailman didn't eat 'em.

LOL! Hair mentioned that her mom made a type of cookie called Ranger Cookies, when I asked what kind she wanted this year. I would dearly love to make some that she might enjoy.

These boys are so cute. They went hunting for New Years.

HOBBITS HIDE IN CUMBRIA
By Staff Reporter
Published in The News and Star on 02/01/2003

LORD of the Rings hobbits Frodo, Pippin, and Merry escaped Middle Earth to spend New Year in the Cumbrian countryside, the News & Star can reveal.

Hollywood superstars Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan swapped the film shoot for a traditional pheasant shoot, before retreating to a farmhouse to see in the New Year.

The News & Star found the hobbits and their Hollywood entourage on a country estate at Edenhall, in the Eden Valley near Penrith.

Elijah, who stars as Frodo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, said: "It's unbelievable here, absolutely beautiful. It's so good to get away for a couple of days."

Asked how the rolling Cumbrian hills compared to the mountains of Middle Earth, the fictional setting for the Lord of the Rings, Elijah laughed and replied: "It's very similar actually, we all feel very at home here. I think of the land of Rohan when I look around."

Billy, who plays Pippin, said: "It's like we're back in the Shire - Tolkien would have been proud!"

American Elijah, 21, explained that after the December release of the second part of the film trilogy, The Two Towers, the three off-screen friends wanted to escape the glare of the public and rest for a few days.

He said: "The public eye is the last place we wanted to be over New Year, so it's great to be here and away from everything. We're just having a few quick days away."

Billy, a native of Glasgow who was voted Scotland's most eligible man in 2002, proudly displayed a brace of pheasants he had shot on New Year's Eve. He said: "Not bad for a beginner - I got three in a row today."

Dominic, who is originally from Manchester, said that they hoped to hunt until dusk, and then enjoy "a few quiet drinks" to bring in the New Year.

Elijah said they were going to leave on New Year's Day and hoped to move on to Scotland.

He added: "It's going to be a very hobbity New Year."

The visit to Cumbria comes just weeks after the release of The Two Towers, the spectacular second instalment of the film adaptation of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

An estimated 25,000 people have been to see the movie in Carlisle since it opened on December 18, and almost 5,000 people went to see the blockbuster at the Plaza cinema Workington in its first five days.

He said while doing an interview for a newspaper!

There must not be any "away" for these guys right now.

Hi Hair,

That's funny, my brothers and I went pheasant shooting on New Year's eve also, behind dogs, which is nice, along with our sons, had a nice time, shot up the pheasants pretty well.

My daughter (20) went too, just to walk with us, she had a good time, now wants to learn to shoot to, so she can hunt with us...naturally, I am happy about that, already trying to figure out the right gun for her.

Hello, everyone, it's nice to be back in the hole again.

I have a Winchester pump action 20 gauge that my Dad chose for me, if that helps!

The potato guns were a huge success, especially at my brother's New Year's Eve party. Lot's of people got excited and want to make them, I believe there are suddenly going to be alot of those things in that part of the world.

Interestingly, one shot from one of the potato guns caused a ghost story to happen, in a very humorous way.

Glad you're back! We will try not to test you on what you missed!

I haven't been hunting since the old dogs got old. I wouldn't go without them, I hunt for them. I should have gone this year, would have been kind of comical to watch them try! - Just need to bring a wagon in case they get oo tired to get back!

I am sort of thinking 12 gauge, maybe an automatic to mitigate recoil and noise, tho I am worried about the length of autos. She is small, about 5'3", so I'm hoping that cutting off the stock and getting a shorter, such as 26", barrel could help.

I just like 12's because they are a little more forgiving and can reach out a little more, too.
