The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yeah... Last time when the wind was gonna kick up, I felt nothing... Air flow patterns are not easy to predict! Being within the disruptive effect of the Black Hills usually saves me... Unless it is coming from due South, which it was. I have small branches all over my yard, and a couple larger ones I had to pull off the fence. - Oh and in the middle of the wind, I notice that some of the light panels in my parn were loose and flapping, so I fixed those. Other than that, unscathed.

Need to clean my fish tank today.

You have fish too!???

Do you double as the Olympia Municipal Zoo?

Speaking of which...do you know of the Sherman Valley Ranch? For years we have boarded our dogs there when we go off on ski trips and they absolutely LOVE the place. They do more horse-boarding than dog-boarding there, which my dogs love since they are so fascinated with (and fond of) horses. It's like taking them to camp (so we feel less guilty about taking off!). My dogs are heading back there next Sunday for this year's week of "camp" (when we head off for a week of skiing in Canada).

I know where the Sherman Valley Ranch is, but I have never driven up the driveway.

Your dog's kinship with horses is not accidental, which I am sure you know already, about Dalmations. They were bred to accompany fine horses and wagons into town, and guard them while their masters went inside.

I am something of a zoo. I used to have a bird, which I lost to the cat. I have learned something about having too many members of the food chain at one time. No ducks or chickens with hunting dogs, and no loose parakeets when one owns a cat.

That said, fish really aren't pets, they are decor.

Hair, how will you get away from the animals to come to EntMoot? Are there horse-kennels?

There are boarding facilities, but really, I will really try to find someone who will come and stay here for the week. Easier on the animals to stay home, and probably cheaper to pay a sitter... a friend, I hope.

You don't have my definition of decor...it's a pet if it involves feeding and work (the cleaning bit). Decor just sits there until one's wife dusts it.

You know the dog play position (front feet thrust forward, head down, butt up, tail straight up, front half bouncing up and then down while barking)...well, my female dal once crossed Waddell Creek ahead of a group of horses and turned around on the beach and did the dog-play position routine in front of a horse that had just forged the river behind her. She even went so far as to roll on her back to try and entice the horse to jump in and play.

The horse just looked quizzically at her shenanigans with its head held low to sniff at this strangely acting creature. It didn't speak dog...much to the dismay of my dog.

My house had better not have any decor, then. I don't really dust and I doubt my husband will!

2JM: although it's not even New Years yet, seems K-Mart is ready to skip a month into February. Susan did a vitamin run and while looking for the half price Christmas lights and stuff, she found a Valentine's Day display featuring LOTR-TTT. The gang is all there, 30 foil Valentines with our favorite characters for $2.99. You may want to check it out. No, I won't be sending them out, collector's value and all. :-)

I bet we all know someone that we'd like to send a "Saruman Valentine" to!

Well, we went. I took both boys and it was a horrendous experience...

The only place to sit was right in front of 3 very loud (and I mean loud, not voice level loud) teenage girls that talked the entire time...a constant hysterical yammering. Finally Josh turned to me and said "I can't hear it...can we go home?" So I got the boys and demanded my money back. The manager said it would be better in a few weeks when school was back in session, but that they had even had a big fight in there yesterday.

We saw all of 30 minutes.

Heh...

The day before I might have been part of the fight. I hope the winner was the one who started out with a PFFFFT!

Fish tank is all clean... Now on to the next thing... go to the feed store I guess!

Too bad he didn't kick them out.

He offered to, and I said that was up to him, but that I'd missed the first 30 minutes of it and wanted my money back and he was very cooperative. I told him where I was sitting and he might have done something after I left. I don't care. School starts back up on Jan. 7th (the 6th is just a teacher work day...I did a little research.) I'll take Matthew at least during the day then.

You would not have believed the language. These young girls...13? 14 years old? Swearing so badly that I felt bad my little ones were there to hear it.

Some people might think The Two Towers is a too violent for a four year old...I beg to differ. It's the audience that concerns me.

I did see the intestines fly out of that orc as the other orcs frenzied to eat him this time...missed it the first time and I doubt the boys even recognized what it was...

ooooh. I haven't noticed any flyin' intestines either!

Too bad about the false start. What a drag to have it wrecked by rude people.

Oh, that's too bad 2J! :( Especially for your boys!

...and there was a fight there the other day? If this is what LOTR fandom is turning into, I'm not so sure I want to be associated with it. Why is it always a small segment of the population makes life so miserable for everyone else!

Well, here's looking forward to a better report after the 7th.....

It's fast... Right as they pounce on him, pieces of him go flying up in the air. I'd heard about the intestines, but it's so fast. Matthew might be able to figure it out, as he has a good understanding of anatomy...but Josh still thinks that food goes straight to his feet the minute it enters his mouth! LOL

It's a $2 matinee. Think about it...if you're a mom or dad that rarely interacts with your kid during the week and then is thrust with having to deal with them for 2-3 weeks during the middle of a snowy winter...wouldn't you brush them off on the general public for a couple of bucks if you could?

I tell you, it's rediculus that the public school system must take these long breaks...how do they expect the parents to deal with the kids for that long?

I can't wait for school to start back up.
