Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Bear, is the local news seeing any pieces of the shuttle of any size at all?Yes, reports of pieces as big as 4 feet in size. To us, the best coverage so far has been CBS; Gunga Dan has been in his chair since about 9:30 central time or so, and they've been getting a lot of info from the Texas affiliates. Dan, being from Texas, helps in that area I'm sure.
I think it will be very difficult to know for sure what happened. But, I have a sick feeling that it may turn into a major scandal for NASA. Just speculation on my part, and I do admit to being a tinfoilist.
I don't think many folks will take stuff home; lots of space-related industry in East Texas, where much of the debris has come down.

Bear...I know what you mean. When the Challenger went down, it was the worst thing that anyone could remember, since what? Kennedy was shot?
Then the horror of 9/11. Nothing can compare to that.
The thing that upsets me about this, is this was our best and our brightest. They worked so hard to get where they were. Very sad.
But I suspect it was an accident. No attack. It's a different feeling, nothing compared to 9/11. That was a mixture of sadness, rage, and especially horror.

NASA wants to know what happened here more than any of us. Lets pray they don't have to waste their energy defending themselves against unfair hindsight.
I am glad they are finding some sizable pieces.

That was one of the worst mornings I can remember, turning on the TV from bed to see what was up in the world.

it was the worst thing that anyone could remember, since what? Kennedy was shot? Yes, pretty much... it was the first major disaster that I could remember happening. I was too young to know anything about the RFK and MLK assassinations (I was only 4 in 1968).
I think it was an accident as well; what I am afraid of is that it may have been preventable. I think the only way it could have been terrorism is if someone snuck a bomb on board before takeoff; very unlikely.

Too easily people get lulled into thinking that technology is routine. With efforts as complex as this, you always walk shoulder-to-shoulder with disaster.

They are saying that we cannot put the shuttles on hold this time like we did after the Challenger because we have people in the space station whose lives depend on those shuttles flying.

Can only hope they can figure this out to enough of a degree by then.

Putting the shuttles on hold would, IMO, be a really bad idea even if there weren't astronauts. They need to make sure things are as safe as can be... but we can't give up here.
