Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I got it pretty well saved as a series of screen caps in order by time. Unbelievable.

I know. But everything on that shuttle is a safety concern. There will always be debate about them... which is better? - which is easier to make? - pink or blue? Debate about everything, including bottom lines. They could build the thing out of diamonds but could we afford to do anything else too? Most of their decisions went right, was all I was trying to emphasize.... it only takes one thing they didn't know quite enough about for the whole thing to come apart.
I react kinda violently to the human tendency to want to blame. Forgive me if anything I say comes out harsh. It is just that finger-pointing before the fire is even out slaps me hard.

RoTK Two Towers Preview Rumours
Demosthenes @ 1:37 am EST In March last year, Peter Jackson attached a four-minute Two Towers preview to the end of Fellowship of the Ring. It's starting to seem quite likely that he'll be doing a similar thing for Two Towers. This of course gives us something to look forward to in just over a month's time. Check out this spoilericious report from the boards of Comingsoon.net.
This report was posted on the Comingsoon.net forums on January 30 by Jedi5150. Now, keep in mind that at this stage it's still pretty rumoursome, but this is what Jedi5150 had to say:
"SOURCES" are reporting that PJ in the coming weeks will be viewing fine cut and complete footage of RoTK for the extended preview to added to TTT in March. "THEY" say that PJ has a short list of certain scenes he wants to put in and then he will view any other footage to add and make it complete. According to "SOME" this is what PJ's list is said to include:
*Aragorn handing the brooch back to it's rightful owner, Pippin. This sounds cool, because if you remember TTT preview the opening scene was of Aragorn picking up Pippin's brooch, and to have the preview of RoTK to start with this scene, it makes for a great continuation. That would (also) be our first glimpse of the reunion aka the road to Isengard.
*Ride of the Rohirrim
*Merry pledging his sword
*Pippin approaching the palantir
*Shots establishing Gondor, perhaps moments before the SIEGE OF GONDOR
*The meeting between Faramir and Eowyn
*Establishing shots of Pellenor fields
*Mouth of Sauron
*Aragorn walking up to the palantir
*Pippin riding with Gandalf on Shadowfax
*Shots establishing moments before the battle at the black gate
*Aragorn in his Gondorian armor, riding into battle
*Paths of the dead
*"Minor" shots of Shelob
*(And although) they do not want to show too much... Denethor
FINALLY (for) THE BIG FINALE, I have possible dialouge to go with this one ... Frodo and Sam by the crack of Doom, SAM: DESTROY it Mr. Frodo! FRODO: no ... I will not destroy it! THE RING IS MINE!!!
WOW!

finger-pointing before the fire is even out slaps me hardWhich is why I should turn off the news but I probably won't.
To: HairOfTheDog
Well I'm waiting for the investigation results on Columbia to come out before I do any finger pointing about that. With the Challenger disaster, would space exploration have been so terribly harmed if they had waited for warmer weather to launch?
To: HairOfTheDog
It looks like a star! Not like the Challenger, that looked like a big mushroom cloud and you could see the actual pieces...this just flames like a great beautiful star. Like Earendil, with the Silmaril.
To: ksen
WOW Kevin - There are some great and wonderful things there.... I am definataly gonna post that over in the spoiler thread. Thanks!
Dang! Those lousy squirrels are starting to collect nesting material.

With the Challenger disaster, would space exploration have been so terribly harmed if they had waited for warmer weather to launch? Of course not... But we did have to learn that it was important to consider it.

The pictures really are amazing.

Oh my. I was busy working on the website this morning and just heard what happened. This takes me back to a January morning in 8th grade. Prayers going up for the families of the victims.
Must go watch some news now...

Hey, everyone...
Went and woke up Rose and told her the bad news, then we spent the next couple of hours cuddling on the bed and flipping between all the channels, watching the news. But, this is the first big disaster that I had first news of from reading the web.
Jen, yeah, this is how Challenger felt. Although for me personally, this one isn't affecting me as deeply; maybe because I am old enough to remember Challenger (I was 21 when it went up) or maybe because after 9/11, this just doesn't seem as... big, somehow. Sad that one can become numb to tragedy.
Being in Texas, we're getting some local news about debris fields and eyewitness sightings. Apparently some people even as far south as Austin saw the plume, although we didn't hear any of the sonic booms here; I was up at the time, and didn't hear anything.
Now the recriminations will begin, all the usual suspects complaining about how we shouldn't have manned space flight. My own suspicion is that one of two things happened: either a burn-through on the wing that was damaged during the launch, or a structural failure of some kind. However, there are reports of debris down in Ft. Worth, and Plano, which means to me that the breakup must have started further west, probably over the Texas panhandle.
I'm glad George Bush is President. I hope he will initiate a top-to-bottom reorganization of NASA; it's been needed for some time.

"Yes, the talking is what makes me nuts."
That's for sure. Yesterday, with that Post Office truck, they decided to go "live." Since nothing was happenning, they just kept repeating themselves, not just retelling the same story, but repeating endlessly the same sentences.
To: Sam Cree
Heh.... yeah, I was watching the postal truck yesterday too. I was on the live thread for that.
To: Sam Cree
Fox News just said something about unverified reports of human remains....

That would not be good.
Bear, is the local news seeing any pieces of the shuttle of any size at all? I marvel at the task of trying to put it all together if each of the pieces would all fit in the truck of a car. It will be a tough job to figure out what happened.

I sure hope folk don't take this stuff home. We need it.
