What are your recommedations for best digital cameras?
Well, in that case...
There are a lot of nice little cameras out there these days. What I would do if I were you would be to go down to a local store like a Staples that has them out on display, where you can easily pick them up and handle them.
How the controls work makes a big difference. There is no one size that fits all. You need to actually look at them and see whether you personally feel comfortable with the way they operate.
There *is* a definite tendency among digi-cam makers to try to get too smart for their own good. They either make things too complicated (because they do it), or they make them so simple that you almost cannot understand them.
You really need to go look for yourself.
Personally, I do not like digi-cams that do not handle like conventional cameras. Good-bye Casio. Nor do I like Sonys.
I do not think you would go too far wrong with Olympus, Konica, or Kodak. I would suggest you look especially hard at these.
Of the three, my very hardest look would at the Olympus. The last time I checked -- which was a couple years ago -- they handled naturally, had a nice computer interface, and took excellant pictures.
Konica would come next. Nothing at all wrong with them.
Kodak has been making a major effort to produce consumer level digital cameras that are simple to use. My impression is that they are doing a very good job of it. So look at them also. My problem with Kodak involves quality control -- I think the chance of getting a "lemon" Kodak is higher than with either of the other two brands (where it is almost zilch). On the other hand, Kodak will fix or replace anything that is wrong promptly and without any argument whatsoever.
So, without looking, get yourself an Olympus. There would be no mistakes or regrets there.
But, really, seriously, all that said, get the Nikon. They can be used as point-and-shoot. They are just fine for that. Excellent.
Plus, they can also be used for other things. You don't out-grow them in a year.
Digital photography can become very addictive. The ability to edit the photos you take on your computer, print them out on your printer, and email them to your friends is wonderful. It is much more fun than watching television.
Btw, a good, cheap editing program is "Paint Shop Pro." You can find it on the web. About $35, and well worth it.
Get the Olympus.
No, get the Nikon. You will never regret it.
Just get something. Great fun!
Go look at and handle all of them.
For a family camera, I would recommend the Olympus with the 10 to 1 zoom. My brother has it, and love's it. Then get a memory card reader to attach to your computer.
