This is our own corner of Free Republic where homeschoolers can discuss what curriculum we use, vent when needed, share our successes, compare notes, alert each other to things we find on the internet, and vent some more.

Wow, I realized something this morning I'm not happy about. I have limited experience with teaching ESL. I'm now tutoring my Vietnamese neighbors and they are coming a long fine. One of the sentences she had to read from her ESL book today was, "Did you sign the petition for the Clean Energy Bill", or something like that. Then when I was on the computer, looking for stuff for her to do, I found this paragraph...

Death Penalty Quiz

I mean, of the 5 billion subjects they could give an immigrant a grammar quiz on, it would have to be a paragraph about a non merciful judge. Whatever! The paragraph doesn't upset me too much, it's the subject matter.

Am I being over sensitive here?

Once they have quickly received their citizenship, right before an election, pushed through by Democrats (as happens in Texas) they are loyal liberals forever. Not to mention all the "gifts" given by the Government god, which means so much to them. If they don't have them sucked into liberalism by then, they will for sure catch them in ESL class. Am I wrong?

For the record, my Vietnamese neighbors are die hard Capitalist and work like animals. I'm proud to know them and we have become good friends.

Good morning. As an FYI - some home school families might not realize it, but Ebay is a great source for books and other material. We just bought a couple of Saxon Math text books for around $15.00 plus shipping and they are in A1 shape.

I get trouble when I look at Ebay, but yes, I've found much of what we are using there...

I know this is going to sound weird, but I was hoping someone might have an idea of what I'm talking about.

We are working on creative writing today and I was looking for my list of "sensation words", which I can't find. I have a list of "transition words" to give Ally, but I wanted a list of "sensation words" too. We are working with the thesaurus right now, which is just as good or better, but a sheet of paper in her hand sure makes the writing go quicker and is less painful.

Has anyone seen word lists on the internet?

Bent and Cote, next week Al has to write a simile poem about something around the house. We have been having so much fun with similes and personifications lately. If you have any suggestions, please offer them. *begging*. LOL

(((hugs)))

My favorite simile is also scripture:

Like as the hart desireth the waterbrooks, so longeth my soul after thee, Oh God. My soul is athirst for God.

BTW, let me guess what you're having for lunch today.

It was good to meet you last night. Sorry for the bums rush at my house, but I could see my husband was upset about something. Looks like he has to travel to Hagerstown, MD next week. They are moving some of his job responsibilities there and we are a little concerned about what that means for his division in Jax.

You know, I didn't even think about it, but I should have given you half of all that food. Duh! I'm sorry I was so thoughtless. Yes indeed, that is a beautiful simile. The word is full of beautiful writing.

Well, she just finished two paragraphs of her essay. I can't believe she got that far. LOL I had to go over outlines today also. She picked that right up, thank goodness.

I didn't, cote. Thanks for the heads-up!

If there is a homeschool ping list, I wouldn't mind being added to it. :-)
