LoTR-The Two Towers: Book discussion (The Green Dragon Inn) III

Posted on 07/26/2002 11:29:06 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Green Dragon Inn

This is a chapter discussion of The Two Towers, volume two of the Lord of the Rings. It is a continuation of our discussion of Lord of the Rings that started with Fellowship of the Ring and finished a few weeks back. FoTR discussion thread.

We will cover one section of the book per week. Sometimes short, related chapters may be combined, and the process may evolve as we go to keep everybody happy! If you are joining late, jump right in, but please stick to the chapter currently being discussed. We should be a bit careful with topic and spoilers (especially if we are joined by some reading for the first time) but feel free to draw lines related to other events in the story. If you do misbehave too much you will be sent to Took's Corner. As always, if you want to chit-chat or share other news… I would probably be best to post that in The Hobbit Hole thread.

It is OK this time to share images from the Two Towers (that illustrate the current chapter of course!) They are fun snapshots that show our story coming to life. Use your head, we don't want to slow down the thread too much, but most of us love a few pics in the thread.

Every week I will ping you to the new chapter or section …. Let me know if you would like to be on - or off - this list. I will serve as the Thain of the list.

So lets read, listen and become inspired by the many aspects of The Lord of the Rings that touch us deeply and reconnect us to the values we aspire to. Many great discussions have already been had, and I hope that this thread will produce even more. Many FReepers have wonderful things to say about LoTR, whether the fantasy reconnects them with their faith, with their relationships with friends and family, or simply illustrates the splendor of great acts of heroism and sacrifice in the constant battle of virtue versus corruption.

Besides, we Tolkien fans need something to keep us busy while we wait for the film to come out December 19. This thread will adjust the schedule as necessary to be finished before the film comes out!

I have always felt that the 'walking tree' that Sam's cousin (or was it uncle) saw in the North Farthing of the Shire was, in fact, an Ent-wife,....

I had that same thought.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping there was a story about them in one of the Unfinished Tales/History of Middle-Earth books.

I've been under the weather all week and finally had enough time to rent the movie. I was extremely disappointed. I don't think Jackson got any of it right. If I have time, I'll post my top 30 unfavorite things about it.

Please do, I would be extremely interested in hearing them and talking about them. Maybe we could do that over in the Hobbit Hole?

I hope you're feeling better.

Oooh we would love to hear your list! - but please post it over in the Hobbit Hole thread!.... But I will say that I was hyper-critical when I saw it the first time. I do hope you will watch it again. I recanted most of my misgivings about it after seeing it again, when the things that are very good began to outweigh the things that were not exactly right. The first time through is just so emotional.

As Treebeard would say.... Don't be hasty!

Is it possible to get someone who said they absolutely hated it to see it again?? I thought for sure this person would get SOMETHING good out of it. It was very dismaying when they came back and stated with quite a bit of passion that they hated it. I just dont understand how they could!!!

;D

We rented it last night. Watched it 3 times in the theater, now at home. We got thru about 2 hours last night before bed time. Kids told me to hurry home so we can finish it. Have a FOTR marathon all weekend. And I think for us, it has gotten better every single time.

Hopefully he will post his list of peeves over in the Hobbit Hole... But I hope he watches it again before he writes... If you click my profile, you will see my review of the film that I wrote hours after the first viewing. Later on down the thread I posted again after seeing it a second time.

NOW! - We should be talking about Treebeard! Did you listen to the audio files of Tolkien reading! - Did you love the last one with the Hroom Ha Ra Hooms?

We didn't cry, but it was definitely an excellent rendition of the book saying they moaned as they were felled.

Are all the trees in New Zealand varieties of Eucaplypts, as most are in Australia? If so, I wonder what the implications are for the Ents.

Maybe y'all can help me out (since we're talking about Treebeard).

I've always had a problem with imagination when it comes to the Ents -- for the life of me I can't get a good mental image of what an Ent looks like and moves like.

I keep conjuring up really bad images of people playing the parts of trees in bad plays or operas, or some Monty Python kind of thing.

I just can't ever seem to come up with something "convincing" in my mind's eye.

Have you heard the BBC radio play of LOTR? (the one where Ian Holm is Frodo). I like it when Pippin drives Treebeard to the point of hastiness with all his questions! "It's a meeting of Ents, Pippin!" It sounds like he actually snaps at the little hobbit.

Thanks for the ping. I've been terribly busy, so haven't been able to partcipate in the threads, but please keep the pings coming!

I was so excited to see the movie on DVD (for the fourth viewing) that I rented the disk while waiting for my own copy to be shipped. AHHHHHHH...I got my fix. I'm re-reading the book to be ready for TT. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!

Off to work now!
