I was just curious and wanting to know what we all do for a living when we're not here scouring the threads of FR. So what do YOU do for a living?

How do I stand it? It's actually a great place to work. One thing a lot of people don't realize about the newspaper industry is how completely separate the business side is from the news side, especially in their cultures. I've worked at three newspapers, and in every case the business side folks were pretty much moderate-to-conservative no matter how intensely left-wing the editorial slant of the publication was.

As far as impact, I assume you're talking about any possible impact a conservative such as myself might have what shows up on the editorial page or in the slant of the news. Zero. As a marketing guy, my input on those areas would be quite unwelcome no matter what political position I was advocating. 90% of the work I do is with advertising sales people. If you know anyone involved with advertising, they'll tell you about the hissy fits that journalists will throw if they perceive that ad folks are tying to influence the editorial product in any way.

Good to know there are others of your ilk....even if you are not in the writing side of things there. Too bad you can't have an impact (yes, on the wriring, editorial side of things). No, don't know others in your business or in the newspaper business at all. Around here, most newspapers, pardon the expression, stink. But, then, the ADS are what keep them going and all those businesses going - so you are in the right side of that work at least. Just wish we could find a way to break into the iron clad world of liberal/socialist/communist possession of most newspaper writing in this country.....don't you?

So what do YOU do for a living?

I'm a web developer by trade, and dabble in radio as more of a hobby (I don't get paid very much for that hobby - I just run board for a talk station on the weekends). I write on the side, and am hoping to publish my first book (tenatively titled, "Ramblings of a Black Conservative") in about 12-18 months - sooner if my wife -- She-who-must-be-obeyed -- has her way; she makes a great agent...

Not at all- I got the househusband status when I closed the wrecker & welding service and my wife was the only one of us who could land a full-time job... she actually had one full-time & 3 part-time jobs until health problems ( needed a plate & fusion in her neck! ) forced dropping a couple of them.

Teeth really can cause a lot of agony- she is better, but the drain is staying until Monday... it was really abcessed, and the site is still swollen. At least the rotten thing's out of her head and the infection seems to be under control. My Dad was born in 1890, and I still remember his stories about all the "anesthesia-free" dental work he had done...~shudder~!!

Unix systems administrator. If someone doesn't know what that is, I'm one of the guys that keep web pages, systems and networks running for various companies. I've been doing this work for 17 years and love it. Being a contractor I get to work at different companies for up to two years at a time and see the different business management styles.
