Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.

2002 April 29
See Explanation. Rolling mouse over image will bring up
an annotated version. No higher
higher resolution version is available today.

Dusk of the Planets
Credit & Copyright: Jerry Lodriguss

Explanation: A great grouping of planets is now visible to the west just after sunset. Over the next two weeks, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn -- all the planets of the inner Solar System -- can be seen in a single knowing glance. The image on the left captured them all in one frame. Connecting the planetary dots delineates the edge-on ecliptic, the plane in which the planets orbit the Sun. The shot was taken on April 23 near Chatsworth, New Jersey, USA, and even includes scattered light from the Sun and the Moon. Besides the planets, the Pleiades and Hyades open clusters of stars are visible.

TOPICS: Astronomy; Astronomy Picture of the Day; Science
KEYWORDS: constellation; evening; hyades; jupiter; mars; mercury; planet; pleiades; saturn; sky; solarsystem; star; twilight; venus
Today's offering is different; there's no higher-resolution image.
Instead, they have a "mouse over" changing image.
Unfortunately, the "onmouseover" command is not supported by Freerepublic.com.
So I have taken the liberty of modifying the display to include both images.
If you would like to see the original mouseover display of the 2 images,
go to APOD 4-29-02.

Get on the APOD PING list!

Those space aliens who visited the Dogans--weren't they from the Pleiades? They said something about some star or planet or something up there whose matter was so dense a cubic inch, on earth, would weigh a ton, or something like that. Oh yeah, the Dogans said that the Pleiades were really seven stars...something like that.

Report back to the StarCruiser, Ensign Beast.

Remember your orders: "No fraternizing with the earthlings!"

Did they say the space aliens looked like porposes? Seems like their space suits were full of water. Maybe we should go over there and talk to the Dogans ourselves.

The Subaru forces from the REAL Pleiades insist there are only 6 stars....

... and they turned the porpoise creatures into sashimi.

Stay tuned for bulletins. ;^)
