Pole Cats

by John Toolan

It could have been yesterday. That's how vividly defending Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves remembers his first cat race 15 years ago.

"Felipe wasn't the biggest or the strongest cat in town," he says, "but he was mine, and I was proud of him."

As a 12-year-old in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Catroneves coaxed Felipe to the top of a 5-meter pole quicker than three other cat trainers, winning his first race before a crowd of cheering neighbors.

Cute article. Pretty good research for this story; it might fool a lot of readers.

Discover Magazine does something similar each April. Lots of people take it seriously.

This is madness! Not only is it cruel to the cats, it's dangerous as well! Look at the pictures - and tell me - where is the safety gear? Where are the kitty helmets? The crash pads? What kind of counseling is offered to the cats that don't win?

This insanity must be stopped!!!!!!!!

There's got to be some hidden clues, too, in the names in the story.

Isaac Asimov liked wordplay; one of his short stories was called Shah Guido G.

I'd call this a shaggy dog story too, but cats might object...

Why do you think it's not real? I find it very believable and quite interesting. 'Splain please.

Remember what I said about the names?
One cat is called Cindrico.
How about race car driver Tim Cindric?

Cindric is now president and radio man for Castroneves' crew.
The car is a Chevy Dallara.

Here is the latest procedure on How To Bathe A Cat: 1. Thoroughly clean toilet. (optional)

2. Lift both lids and add shampoo.

3. Find and soothe cat as you carry him to bathroom

4. In one swift move, place cat in toilet, close both lids and stand on top so cat cannot escape.

5. The cat will self agitate and produce ample suds.(ignore ruckus from inside toilet, cat is enjoying this)

6. Flush toilet 3 or 4 times. This provides power rinse, which is quite effective.

7. Have someone open outside door, stand as far from toilet as possible and quickly lift both lids.

8. Clean cat will rocket out of toilet and outdoors, where he will air dry.

Sincerely,

The Dog
