The Stonehenge of the East Has Been Quietly Moving for Thousands of Years and Its Mystery Just Got Bigger

Archaeologists spent decades treating Rujm el-Hiri as a one-of-a-kind puzzle. A vast maze of basalt rings near the Sea of Galilee, nearly five thousand years old and stretching 492 feet across. Locals call it the Wheel of Ghosts. Researchers called it the Stonehenge of the East. Now satellite data shows the whole region has been slowly rotating the monument out from under the old theories, and the site is not even unique.

Researchers from Tel Aviv University and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev first used satellite imagery to map hundreds of features around the site, including tumuli, linear walls, and flower-like enclosures. A follow-up study published in March 2026 in PLOS One went further. By examining high-resolution images from 2004 to 2024 they documented 28 large circular structures within 25 kilometers of Rujm el-Hiri.

"Many of these circles sit near seasonal streams and plug into networks of ancient field walls and enclosures. Some stand close to dolmens, the old stone burial chambers. That pattern suggests the builders were marking territory, managing livestock, gathering for ceremonies, or simply organizing communal space."

That's a lot of work to allocate garden plots and corrals. But an interesting story.

Looks like a fortification to me - concentric defensive rings with offset gaps so that each one faces a solid defensive barrier.

Or else a maze for a pre-historic theme park.

.....near seasonal streams and plug into networks of ancient field walls and enclosures.

Maybe reservoirs to capture seasonal water?
