Tesla’s most revolutionary product didn’t even last a decade.
On Friday, in the middle of the night Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X.com that Tesla Cybertruck production will stop in the middle of 2027. The reason? According to Musk it’s to make room for Cybercab production.
Musk make the announcement on X.com, which was formerly Twitter before he bought the platform in a hostile takeover, at 12:30 am on Friday. The executive has since posted nine times on X effectively burying the post, though it’s currently trending on the platform he owns.
The quiet part out loud: The Cybertruck is the largest flop in automotive history. Now the CEO, who arguably at that time bet the company on the triangle-shaped electric truck with body panels glued onto its arguably revolutionary exoskeleton frame, will bet the company on self-driving robo taxis the company calls Cybercabs.
There will be post mortems upon post mortems for the Cybertruck in which the entire saga is dissected. The truck debuted with the fan fare of a circus on November 21, 20219. Broken promises ensued with a truck that looked similar to the promised product with completely different specifications going into production in July 2023.
Sales took off and then imploded quickly. History will show sales never recovered despite Tesla fans claiming Ford employees would end up working the bread line after the Cybertruck would inevitably destroy the Blue Oval and its F-Series pickup truck sales champs. That did not happen.
The Cybertruck’s Lead Engineer Wes Morrill posted on X that the “Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab.”

1) Alex Trebec: The AMC Pacer, the Pontiac Aztec, Every Minivan ever made, and the Cybertruck.
What are atrocious auto abominations?
2) The article is dripping with glee and contempt.
That thing is really bad looking. I think they could do better than that...
Pointlessly hideous
I once owned a Pontiac Montana. A minivan that was the basis for the Aztec.
Also owned a Gremlin which predated the Pacer.
The Gremlin and Pacer were actually better than average cars. Despite dealer servicing, my Montana did not last 100,000 miles. As ugly as the Aztec is, it is now a thing of beauty compared to the Cybertruck.
The Edsel, the Corvair, the Lada, Ford Lightning...
Every minivan? Ahhh come on.I always liked them. (even though my wife says I’m a dork)
In a Yugoooooooooooooooo...................
Don’t forget the Yugo!
As ugly as the Obama Library.
Was there supposed to be some aerodynamic advantage to that odd and clunky pyramid shape?
I figured that had to be the reason. Certainly not
aesthetics.
Or the Renault Fuego.
Don’t forget Renault LeCar
Watching wrecker recovery shows on U-tube you see EVs and particularly the Cyber-trucks present unusual problems.
I’ve seen a fair many cyber trucks in my part of the world (central Ohio.) exactly one time have I seen one actually carrying something in the bed.
A dork? Here is a Borscht Belt routine that answers this question:
A man walks into a kosher butcher shop, beats his chest, and says proudly, "Mister, I want a five-pound brisket. But my wife, she told me to get a chicken. Well, let me tell you something—in my house, I am the boss! I wear the pants! What I say goes! So give me the brisket!"
The butcher looks him up and down, sighs, and reaches into the case. "Mister," the butcher says, "you’ll take a chicken, and you’ll like it."
I always figured the Cybertruck was a branding move by Musk to get people’s attention. And also just to do something zany because he could.
In that case, the Hudson too.
Nothing that Big and Ugly will survive long. DJT is an exception to that rule.
That’s one way to save money on birth control. (Joking)
Don’t forget the Edsel, the Cadillac Cimarron, the Pinto and Vega. All are far bigger flops (in different ways) than the Cybertruck.
I like my minivan. It comes in handy when I have to move furniture, pavers, appliances, or large boxes. You don’t have to like them, but it was most certainly NOT a flop as a category, especially when introduced in the ‘80s.
