We live at a time when we are facing a relentless wave of AI cyberattacks, and they are becoming insanely sophisticated. On Monday, refrigeration units in supermarkets all over Europe were successfully attacked. But I am not going to talk about that today. In this article, I am going to talk about the sort of AI cyberattack that could turn off your electricity for an extended period of time. This is not a theoretical threat. Hackers have been repeatedly attacking Internet-exposed programmable logic controllers in recent months, and a successful attack could potentially plunge a large portion of the country into darkness right in the middle of the winter.
Evaluating these types of threats is what GovAI does.
It is literally their job.

It is 100% looney to have critical systems being controlled remotely. I’m all for a read-only report remotely (i.e. making sure tings are working smoothly).
I expect that the danger is in too much voltage coming down the line, not so much none. A lot of stuff would be fried. I’m not sure what protection there is.
They are telling us what they are planning on doing to us so they can pretend to be our saviour when they institute their global government.

Food, water, ammo.
They can do what they want, I have a gas electric generator and lots of stored gas.
It was only 26 years ago when Y2K was going to lead to massive problems.
Since then, we have tied nearly everything to the internet.
What a surprise that the bad dudes are taking advantage of those internet connections and cause these problems just for the fun of doing so.
I think that this is sold as “remote updates” - changing the software without sending people around. Once you can do that, you can do anything.
I also expect that the refrigerators in Europe said that, “Everything is Fine!”, while the food spoiled.
Well, good thing they’ve been using solid state transformers since the 1970s. And power lines are Remote controlled since the 90s. They pop and reset. They handle even lightening strikes. It takes physical damage to short them out now.
Of course you have solid state surge protectors inside your house to protect your own vital equipment? Right? Mine is by my left foot. Some ppl call it a UPS with line conditioning. I swapped in some lithium batteries last month for higher capacity.
My hybrid solar inverters are always checking the grid for outages, spikes, and dirty power to flip into off-grid mode. But how many people have that? A hacker putting too much voltage onto the grid would fry a lot of homes' and businesses' appliances and/or even electrical panels, assuming the grid doesn't have checks and balances to catch the surge before it gets to the consumers.
And only 31 years since we started working in earnest to make damn sure nothing happened at 00:00:00 on 2000_01_01. And we succeeded. Maybe that was a mistake. Maybe we should have let the world to go to hell ... as a warning that reliance on automated systems can come at too high a price.
Note to self -— buy more toilet paper.
Before AI - none of this was possible?
And now - it will cost billions and billions of dollars to protect every thing that keeps us civilized?
And - nobody noticed until yesterday?
Good luck trying to locate your Crypto!
I am talking about things like a heat pump, a well pump and freezers - these cannot be run on any kind of UPS that I know of. I would expect all of the lighting to go, though this could be replaced.
This thread is talking about automation, too - not lightning strikes. The sophistication you describe sounds like a negative, not a plus.
If it’s attached to the internet...it’s vulnerable.
Out of curiosity, how does your AC (heat pump) work? Some loads seem too high for solar.
Also, do you think the solar inverters can be hacked remotely?
FReeper Justa,
Is there a rating or measurement that you'd recommend for surge protectors and such for homes? I have surge protectors. And (as stated in comment #11) I have more than that that protects my home's entire electrical panels.
Assuming that there's an upper surge level that the grid's solid state transformers won't let get through, is there a smaller surge range beneath the granularity of the transformers that us homeowners should still protect against?
Thanks
I consider an extended blackout to be a week or more. The only way to get around this is with a solar system big enough to run your house. As my brother found out in Houston after the power was out for a week, that gasoline power generator is about useless after that. He couldn’t find propane, and gasoline was rare. And, the people that had whole house generators that ran on natural gas found out that it takes pressure from an electric pump somewhere to push that gas through the lines. If you go whole house solar, there are so many benefits to this. We stay connected to the grid, but we rarely pull power from it. And, a home solar system is really the only thing that will eventually pay for itself. I have a neighbor that will call me whenever the grid goes down and asks me if I have power. I tell him: “You keep forgetting I always have power.” My wife actually talked me into putting up the solar system, and it was one of the best things we ever did.

Why am I suspicious that the author is an Advocate for Very Big Government Bureaucracies to be in total control of technology????
In order to make people beg for Big Brother to protect them, first the people have to made fearful that Eurasia’s bad dudes are going to hurt them.
Orwell wrote 1984 nearly 80 years ago and it is so relevant today.
