"Only 37% stuck with daily cold showers for all 12 weeks, and quitting was most likely in the first few weeks."
The Swiss are some tough hombres! Or maybe just cheap?
It sounds like a mild version of Wim Hof method to jumpstart your metabolism.
So instead of 4 sick days, you have 3.
BFD.
Good grief, read this so called “study” it is total bunk. The variables and limitations make it a joke.
The biggest “tell” though that it is not a study and is actually propaganda is this part written in the report:
“Cold Showers Cut an Estimated 8.8 Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide
Based on those same 586 participants’ own reports, the dissertation estimates that about 27,664 cold showers were taken, avoiding 8.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide from water heating,”
Didn’t zero keep the white hut at 85 degrees..
Maybe the kinds of people who are tough enough to take cold showers have less days off because they are more likely to suck it up when not feeling well.
I remember back when we were kids, and Mom washed our hair while we were bent over in utility sink, she always did the final rinse with the coldest water possible. She said it was to prevent colds. I guess it worked ‘cause we never were sick. Sometimes she’d add apple cider vinegar to the rinse to make our hair shine — which I guess it might have.
We didn’t have a shower in the ‘50s or ‘60s so it worked. I’d like to do the cold-water thing now, but doing it in a shower with my whole body ... brrrr.
Your immune system is more active when the body is at a higher temperature. Which is why the body produces a fever when you are sick and why people have few illnesses in the summer.
I wonder if this has more to do with basic hygiene than the temp of the water?
I mean, if you are taking cold showers that often you are washing more than most people in the world. While it is common in a lot of places to take a daily shower, that is not the norm throughout the world.
What’s a sick day?
I sort of suspect this is a self-selecting phenomenon. People take cold showers as a part of a health regimen. People taking health regimens seriously take less sick days? Shocker!
that having been said, I suspect cold showers actually are beneficial.
That’s not the reason for the fever. Your body spikes a fever because especially the RNA of viruses but both viruses and bacteria have significant challenges reproducing at higher temperature (proteins don’t function correctly) so it is PART of your immune response, not in order to “goose” your immune response. The same thing happens to your body and cells, by the way, but you reproduce cells WAY more slowly than bacteria and viruses reproduce, so for a few days it give you a massive advantage.
You can now expect dems to ban water heaters in the name of health with the side benefit of saving the planet.
Think of it as a partial cure for sex addiction.
This wreaks of “we need to restrict energy use, so convince people to take cold showers”.
...similar to, “bugs are good for you”.
Yeah...no.
You can have any water heater you want, as long as it is electric.
Heat pump water heaters are preferred...
I’d rather be sick. 😆
It doesn’t count as a sick day if you’re dead
