Here in Cincinnati, we are getting a LOT of political commercials where a Heavy Sidenote is that "public records record your voting." That is, not who you voted for but the fact you voted, and your history of voting. I am not getting this. It seems like some Capone-style thin threat; "your friends and relatives will know if you voted." Does anyone know the theory behind this odd push?

I see a similar commercial “ your vote will be recorded, updated and your friends and family will see how you vote”
I’m also in Ohio.
Here’s a guess. If an illegal is voting it will trigger some
questions in the government records. And some overstaying visas might get looked at.
Vote or Die!
This sounds familiar, I think it was also done a few years back.
OK. Let’s be adults about this. There is virtually nothing “they” don’t know about us. That’s what pisses me off about filing tax returns every year. All we do is punch in our Socialist Security Numbers and 90% of our return is automatically filled out. We fill in the blanks and it’s never enough. We get a letter 6 months later saying we underpaid by X amount. Which we pay. If those assholes know how much we owe, why do they make us jump through all those damn hoops!?
There are public records if you are registered to vote, as well as if you are registered to a given political party. And very likely there are records that you voted in a given election. However, your ballot is supposed to be secret. If that is not the case, heads should roll.
Interesting.
The current issue of the New Yorker has a cartoon of Trump with a Sharpie who made a sign for Vote Here-—on a trash basket outside.
If one is an illegal and trying to avoid imperial entanglements voting is not a good idea.
Unspoken is that they will know if you don’t vote, meaning they can then harvest your ballot and vote for you.
Pi$$ on ‘em. I have voted since 1970. I have always voted republican because I won’t vote for a lying, cheating, dishonest, sleazy dimocrat!! There, now they don’t have to waste their time checking me out.
It’s not just Ohio.
“There is virtually nothing “they” don’t know about us.”
Agreed.
The ones they know little about are foreign intruders with fake names and malevolent intentions.
they will NOT “see how you voted.” They will only know that you voted.
In theory...
In the past three months I have blocked and reported as spam 143 text messages, almost all of which were political. I didn’t give politicians my cell phone number and I am very reluctant to give it to anyone. Some of those were the “everyone will know if you don’t vote”. Some were the equally annoying “if you vote early, we’ll know and be able to stop texting you”. I have no idea how many more attempts were made from those same numbers.
In theory...
The Arsehole Revenue Service sent me a letter in Sept. saying my subchapter S business filing had been received (in March) but was “unreadable or damaged in processing” so I’d have to send another copy in. Which I did, and a few weeks ago I get a letter saying a penalty of $3570 was being applied for “late filing”. Worse, they explained the law requires a penalty of $255 per month PER SHAREHOLDER which would have been $1785, since every filing I’ve ever sent them says clearly there is one and only one shareholder! Fortunately a helpful agent was able to “abate” the penalty. Based on my past record of on-time filing, not because of the absurdity of penalizing me when their own letter admits it was filed on time. He had no explanation for why they couldn’t do simple arithmetic either.
This is what we pay for. Herman Cain, we need your “999” plan more than ever!
This is nothing new. Taking a ballot and voting, be it the Primary or General Election, is a documented civic activity. How you voted on that Ballot is supposed to be the “protected” information.
The majority of States require you to register for a Political party recognized by that State (Dems/ Repubs/ Green/ Libertarian/etc). In the Primary, you can only take a ballot for your declared Party’s slate— Usually that is just the Dems & Repubs. In the General election, you can vote for anybody that made it to the ballot.
15 states use fully open primaries in 2026, where any registered voter can choose which party’s primary to vote in on election day. Several “Swing” States are in this group: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. [note that Snowbirds and others have been known to be registered in more than one State, and whether they vote in both States is a huge bone of contention that goes unresolved from Decade to Decade. That’s why the Trump Administration has sought to get the Voter rolls to address this issue along with non-citizens voting.]
There are 3 States using nonpartisan top-two or top-four primary systems, which are inherently open to all registered voters regardless of party affiliation - Alaska, California, and Washington.
As of 2026, per Ballotpedia (updated yesterday) and Wikipedia, the states that still have paperless in some or all jurisdictions are:
Louisiana — paperless for all voters statewide
Indiana — some counties
Kentucky — some counties
Mississippi — some counties
New Jersey — some counties
Tennessee — some counties
Texas — some counties (curbside voters only, per 2021 law phasing out by 2026)
When your paper ballot is scanned into the System, be it Absentee or in person, that is where your actual vote could be tied back to you, barcode, whatever. No paper, no problem, on the Machine voting as they got all they need to know, probably a face scan, too.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
