The system that has driven life-altering discoveries and helped make the United States a superpower is now under intense strain.
The warning, buried in an obscure government report this summer, was unflinching.
The Defense Department’s vaunted network of research laboratories — whose scientists helped develop satellite communication, radar technology, and even the computer mouse — was in trouble.
The labs lost a significant share of their staff last year, largely in response to the Trump administration’s efforts to thin the federal work force, the report found. Refilling critical positions was proving difficult due in part to President Trump’s demand that new hires be screened for their loyalty to his goals. The report, issued by the Pentagon, pointed to “potentially grave consequences for the future of national defense.”
The turmoil inside scientific research has extended beyond the Pentagon. The Energy Department, a key hub of nuclear and quantum research, has lost more than 1,000 scientists and technical staff. The National Science Foundation, for decades a primary backer of long-term, foundational research, has withheld more than $1 billion in funding. And at the National Institutes of Health, the biggest funder of medical research, officials delayed or canceled more than 2,000 grants to biomedical researchers focused on topics such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and other diseases.
Under Mr. Trump, the federal government is still spending roughly as much on research — about $200 billion this year — as the administrations that came before. Scientists across the country are still receiving grants; universities are still being funded. But beneath the surface, the system of federally funded science that helped make the United States a global superpower is under intense...

My bet is there is as much fraud in federal research grants as there is in Somali Learing Centers.
Grants based on results the grantee wants to see.
That's because "The science is settled."
I support the President insisting patriotic Americans, RATHER THAN CHINESE NATIONALS, be used in American scientific research.
The labs lost a significant share of their staff last year, largely in response to the Trump administration’s efforts to thin the federal work force.
It’s called trimming the fat deal with it.
I saw so many so called companies go belly up when the grant money stopped flowing here, in San Francisco Bay Area.
Their web pages listed founders and boasted of their mission.
There was almost no one at the office or lab
They were bankrupt before the spigot closed.
Good riddance...
For our ornithology research, that was never explicitly or implicitly stated. Our group put together a proposal. If it got accepted - good. If not, we found other funding streams if available.
We moved to a private funding model 7-8 years ago. It actually works out quite well. Again, no explicit or implicit result expectations. It also means our group has greater say in how the data sets get released and to who. We’ve declined to release data to orgs that are advocacy groups and in one case to a Federal agency working on climate affects on certain bird species, as the Fed agency wanted to use it in additional ways they could not adequately explain. So we declined to provide. The agency researchers were not pleased.
That pleases me.
"...Christopher Flavelle, Irena Hwang, Adam Sella, Alan Blinder, Sheryl Gay Stolberg, Benjamin Mueller and Michael..."
They are going to have to resort to a method like Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" lyrics to fit them all in:
"...Harry Truman, Doris Day, Red China, Johnny Ray, South Pacific, Walter Winchell, Joe DiMaggio, Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Studebaker, Television, North Korea, South Korea, Marilyn Monroe..."
More lying-Kar-Bahguhh from the New Yoik Slimez that oozes out from my TeeVee set. They want to keep the Fed dollahs flowing into their pockets!
So, develope a title that blames Trump for something, then write an article that fulfills the premise. That’s journalism in these times.
Stay true.
Funding for the scientific research which showed that Emperor Penguins are eating krill with less Vitamin D because of climate change may be cut off.
The real headline - how Trump is no longer funding Lunaticy Asylums that turn out dangerous liberal terrorists who think its OK to kill Republicans and conservatives.
Meanwhile they want to jail Musk and seize the electric car and space rocket companies.
Who the F do they think they’re kidding?
$1.5 Trillion defense budget just isn’t enough?
