NYC Council bans horse carriages in veto-proof vote that will end 150-year-old Central Park tradition (2028)

Horse-drawn carriages will be banned in New York City after the City Council approved a new bill Thursday that will end a Central Park tradition that’s endured for more than 150 years.

The ban passed in a veto-proof 40-7 vote, with two council members abstaining – despite a last-minute attempt to amend the proposal and push the ban back in 2030.

The ban will take hold on June 1, 2028 and outlaw horse-drawn carriages across all five boroughs.

That means about 200 carriage drivers will see their livelihoods – and entire industry – vanish from the city without a trace in less than two years.

Carriage industry workers quickly returned fire with a pledge to file a lawsuit against the ban, zeroing in on the complete lack of monetary compensation in the bill – which only included vague promises of job training for “new economic opportunities.”

“This bill is a train wreck of constitutional and due process violations,” Transport Workers Union president John Samuelsen said in a statement.

“It offers nothing concrete for blue-collar drivers and carriage owners who will be financially crushed, stripped of their jobs, their licenses, expensive city-issued medallions, small businesses, and way of life,” he added.

I wonder what will happen to the horses. Horses have to earn their keep in some fashion...

Not good for the horses. Also groomers, farrier, and others who support the industry.

People still need glue and wallets. Democrats will either tax something out of existence, ban it altogether or crap on it. They don’t care, they don’t have to care, they’re Democrats.

C’mon, Man!

Just dress up the horses in the “Palestinian” flag.

ANY attempt to enforce the ban can then be called not only Islamophobic, but also pro-Israel.

The property where the livery stables sit is prime real estate.. Some cronies have been lobbying for this to happen so they could scoop up the land.

The stable owners should keep their powder dry until one of these scum buys the land, most likely through eminent domain. Then they can not only get a boatload of money but they can also expose the grift and bribery of individual council members.

Horse meat is very tasty. It makes a delicious pot roast.

However, it is cruelty for anything to live in New York. Those horses have
served their time in hell. Give them a well earned retirement upstate.

Unless they are put out to pasture the likely result will be sold to auction for slaughter. Some may end up being rescued but the killers are the ones with money.

I think history pretty much contradicts that. Ever hear of Arabian horses?

I couldn’t eat a horse any more than I could eat a dog. Civilization was built on the backs of horses and we should honor that and them.

The horse wouldn’t know it; but we would.
