Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Wednesday called allegations that she married her brother “insane” – but didn’t entirely close the door to the possibility of being related to her ex-husband.
“Not to my knowledge,” Omar responded, when asked by MS NOW’s Chris Hayes if there was any “weird kernel of truth” to the claim that she wed her brother.
The decade-old allegations that Omar and her ex, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, got hitched in a failed effort to get him a green card originated on a “Somali blog,” and spread when “right-wing conspiracy theorists” latched onto it, Omar explained in her first interview since federal agents raided her Washington, DC, home last week.
“Somebody put in there that, you know, he had to have been my brother or something to that effect,” the Minnesota Democrat said.
According to Omar, bloggers “went and like found random people who are like .. ‘She introduced him to us and said he was her brother,’ which is, you know, insane.”
Omar then described herself as “working class” and living “paycheck to paycheck,” when asked about her current financial situation in light of documents where Omar suggested she and her husband had a combined net-worth of some $30 million, which she later claimed was a mistake and revised down.
“I have a Toyota Camry that’s from 2016. It’s our only car. I rent my DC place and my Minneapolis place, and so I mean, I don’t know, that sounds like not the majority of Congress, but there’s some of us that don’t come from wealth and don’t have wealth,” she told Hayes.

She's the one who married her brother. The answer is yes. His name is Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Not creepy whatsoever.

“Not to my knowledge”
A lawyer told her to respond that way.
Also the whole interview was set up to rehabilitate her image....and I’ll eat my hat if she wasn’t provided the interview questions in advance.
That’s probably where she’s been....rehearsing her answers to the questions.

Maybe her brother was raised by a completely different family and she'd never met him before? Or her family never told her, He just lived with them?
or she has had a stroke and forgot he was her brother?
Minnesota politics, anything could happen .

“Not to my knowledge,” Omar responded,
Some times you have to reboot to basic questions. What is the purpose of a lie?
The purpose of a lie is to control the future.

Lying runs through the Democratic party like a recessive gene.
Bill had the classic, “It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is. If the—if he—if ‘is’ means is and never has been, that is not—that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement...”.

Summary: Ilhan Omar Discusses Federal Raid on Her Home and Immigration Investigation
In this interview with MS NOW's Rachel Maddow, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) describes an early-morning federal search of her home, an investigation into her immigration history, and what she characterizes as a politically motivated effort by the Trump administration to intimidate her and undermine her congressional service.
- The early-morning raid: Omar says 15–25 Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents arrived at approximately 6 a.m., pounding on the front and back doors after she had slept only two to three hours. Agents presented a search warrant and spent four to five hours searching the house.
- Items seized: According to Omar, agents took 17 items, including her personal phone, older phones belonging to family members, her husband's notebooks, a vintage camera inherited from a relative, and a Somali-language learning book. She says the search focused largely on electronics and old personal items.
- Alleged procedural concerns: Omar says she was presented with paperwork seeking a waiver of her congressional Speech or Debate Clause protections, which she refused to sign. She also says she could not contact her attorney until approximately an hour into the search. The interview raises questions about whether authorities complied with the warrant's conditions, including notifying House counsel. These allegations are discussed in the interview but are not independently established by it.
- Immigration-fraud allegations: The discussion turns to claims that Omar committed immigration fraud, including longstanding allegations that she married her brother. Omar calls those allegations false and says investigators have shifted their focus toward representations her late father made during her family's naturalization process. She argues that authorities already possess the relevant immigration records.
- Claims about her finances: Omar disputes claims that she and her husband are wealthy. She describes their circumstances as working-class, says they live largely paycheck to paycheck while raising four children, and notes that she drives a 2016 Toyota Camry and rents homes in Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis. She also cites a congressional oversight review that found no evidence of wrongdoing regarding her husband's business and financial disclosures.
- Political motivation: Omar argues that President Trump and members of his administration have publicly targeted her for years. She points to previous statements questioning her citizenship, comments by administration officials, and the timing of the raid as evidence that the investigation is politically driven. She also notes that Fox News was reportedly present at the scene early, which she considers suspicious.
- Voter intimidation concerns: Omar connects the investigation to broader federal efforts involving voter registration and immigration. She argues that enforcement actions and visits to immigrants' homes could frighten people away from participating in elections. However, she says reports of long lines at early-voting locations suggest that some voters are responding by becoming more determined to vote.
- Personal impact and resolve: Omar says the raid has made remaining in her home impractical because her address is public and she receives death threats. She describes relying on her faith to withstand the pressure and argues that her opponents ultimately want her to leave Congress. She says Democratic colleagues have supported her publicly and privately, while no Republican colleagues have reached out to express support.
- Prior citizenship review: Omar cites reporting that the Department of Homeland Security investigated her citizenship in 2019 and produced a memo concluding that her citizenship was sound. She argues that reopening the matter under officials who have previously criticized her demonstrates political motivation.
Overall: The interview presents Omar's account of the raid and her argument that the investigation is part of a broader political campaign against her. She maintains that she has done nothing wrong and expresses confidence that the allegations will not result in a legitimate criminal prosecution. The interview primarily reflects Omar's perspective and the interviewer's questions; it does not independently establish whether the investigation is politically motivated or whether the government's allegations have merit.
