Putin reportedly proposes three-way summit with Trump and Xi on Ukraine war — without Zelenskyy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly floated a three-way summit between himself, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the table. The meeting was mentioned in a phone call to Trump on Oct. 9, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing a former Russian intelligence officer briefed on the matter. Such a summit may take place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November in the Chinese city of Shenzhen, according to the report. The call also produced a deal for Moscow to sell diesel on the global market.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said early Monday that “there’s been talks of a meeting. I don’t know whether it’s been finalized, but the president has been clear,” he said in comments reported by Reuters. “The president is open to anything that he can do to help bring a war to an end, if it’s possible, and we’ll continue to look for opportunities to do that,” Rubio told reporters during a visit to Uzbekistan.

It comes amid mounting tensions between Ukraine and the U.S., its largest military backer. Over the past week, a series of moves by the Trump administration has raised fresh questions about Washington’s reliability as Kyiv’s most important military partner. It caused alarm among European allies and prompted criticism from fellow Republicans. Over the weekend, Trump defended his decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports, as well as an executive order on Oct. 18 to waive new Russia sanctions from a bill introduced by the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

Trump and Zelenskyy have traded criticism over how to end the war in Ukraine, with Trump accusing the Ukrainian president of not wanting peace, while Zelenskyy has argued that Washington’s easing of sanctions on Russia risks prolonging the conflict. In a post on X, Zelenskyy said that ″the decision to undo all of this, to block all of it, seems wrong to me.” The tensions come as Russia launched another wave of overnight attacks on Ukraine, firing 16 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the surrounding region and more than 200 drones across the country, according to Zelenskyy. In a post on X on Monday, Zelenskyy said the strikes damaged more than 10 energy infrastructure facilities, leaving at least 550,000 households without power. He also said Ukraine had once again received no advance warning from its partners about the missile attacks. Casualties were reported, while a medical clinic, school, metro station and residential buildings were also damaged.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Minister for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport Serhiy Derkach told CNBC on Monday that Kyiv still hoped to retain Washington’s support despite the growing tensions. Asked whether the Trump administration was abandoning Ukraine and siding with Russia, Derkach said he did not believe the U.S. was abandoning Kyiv, but stressed that Ukraine hoped Washington would continue helping it or at least “stay in the middle. That’s most important for us actually, not to lose the support of the U.S."

Russia has also intensified attacks on Ukraine’s transport infrastructure, including road border crossings, railways and shipping routes, Derkach said. It comes after Trump told Ukraine to stop striking Russian energy infrastructure, claiming that it was driving up global diesel prices. Despite an “energy ceasefire” announced by Trump on Oct. 11, Russia continued striking Ukrainian infrastructure. Kyiv paused its attacks for three days before resuming them last Thursday, citing continued Russian strikes.

“America should see that Russia is not taking any reciprocal steps in response to sanctions relief or agreements. On the contrary, they take every signal of an opportunity to make money as proof that their bet on war is paying off and they can keep fighting,” the Ukrainian president wrote on Sunday. On Sunday, he also told Bloomberg that “steps have been taken to convince Ukraine to capitulate.”

“I am not saying that this is the goal our partners are pursuing. I don’t want to think that our American partners believe the war” against Russia “could be ended sooner at Ukraine’s expense. But that’s how it looks.” Over the weekend, both Kyiv and Moscow traded strikes, with Ukraine launching a strike of over 1,000 drones into Russia, setting fires at an oil export terminal and refinery in the city of St. Petersburg, while Moscow pounded Kyiv with ballistic missiles.

Starlink restrictions and intelligence sharing Last week, Kyiv also accused Washington of ordering restrictions on its Starshield networks, the military-grade version of SpaceX’s Starlink. Ukraine relies on this connectivity to track and intercept incoming threats. CEO Elon Musk pinned responsibility for any restrictions on the U.S. government and Trump, writing on X that “Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the U.S. government.”

Trump denied on Friday that the White House had ordered restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services provided to Ukraine’s armed forces, after Reuters reported on Thursday that the call to restrict Starlink in Ukraine came from someone inside the White House, citing two U.S. officials. The Telegraph reported on Friday that Musk “approached Donald Trump with the idea of slowing down Starlink in Ukraine,” and both had a hand in imposing the restrictions. Additionally, Zelenskyy told NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday that intelligence sharing between the two countries had been interrupted, but later “de-blocked.”

Rubio on Monday denied that Washington had suspended intelligence sharing with Ukraine, contradicting Zelenskyy’s claim that the flow of information had been briefly interrupted, Reuters reported. Speaking to reporters in Uzbekistan, Rubio insisted there had been no pause and said Zelenskyy should instead focus on ending the war, marking another public disagreement between Washington and Kyiv amid deteriorating relations.

It's funny seeing how making concessions to the aggressor has done nothing to diminish his appetite for more aggression.

Mayber he'll mediate between us and his Iranian buddies too.

“U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said early Monday that...“The president is open to anything that he can do to help bring a war to an end, if it’s possible”

I don’t think this was what the Europeans and the Zeepers wanted to hear - the idea of the ADULTS getting together and putting an end to the war.

Almost two years of Trump blaming Ukraine and kissing Putin's butt have not ended the war.

Who knew, right? How is Trump's "3 day war" against Iran going?

History has proven — far more than just Munich in 38 - any nation that relies on other powers to reach “agreements” without them present is a fool.

The idea that Russia + China, and especially of late, the US can negotiate anything for Ukraine is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard.

“Almost two years of Trump blaming Ukraine and kissing Putin’s butt have not ended the war.”

I don’t necessarily consider having Ukraine send 100+ drones to Putin location while Trump told him to wait for a follow-up phone call, in the town of Valday, necessarily “kissing Putin’s butt”, but to you guys, anything short of Trump nuking Moscow is doing just that.

You do realize that sounds a lot like the "new, new world order" is the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance in 1914, right?

We didn't setup the UN and pay for the Marshal Plan and NATO just for others, but to prevent another great power scramble that would lead to WWIII. As Merlin once said, "It is the doom of men that they forget."

Should this meeting happen, the bombardment of Russia that would occur while it was going on would be epic. Expect Europe and all the rest of the folks arming Ukraine these days to give them ALL the munitions they can so that Zelenskyy can do his BEST to keep the war going. It’s just too damned profitable!

Of course Putin is proposing this. He wants the US to impose a surrender on Ukrainian that he cannot win by force of arms. This would not work. Ukraine is fighting for its survival and would not accept any “deal” of which it is not a party.

What does Xi have to do with it?

For all that matter, what does America have to do with it?

This is between Russian and “Little Russia”

“What does Xi have to do with it?”

Xi can end this war as quick as Trump - stop selling chips and the many other parts that can be used in drones.

A bit of straw man argument. I don't expect Trump to nuke Moscow but to do two things: 1) outline a realistic peace treaty where both sides must make territorial concessions and Ukraine gets real security guarantees; 2) press Putin by making it clear Ukraine will get more arms and press Ukraine with a loss of support if it won't make any concessions.

Right now, Trump removed all direct US support apart from intel and puts all the pressure on Ukraine and then wonders why Ukraine tells him to eff off.

Trump simply fails to understand that to the Ukrainians there's little difference between capitulation and loss on the battlefield: the country's elite will be murdered or imprisoned and tortured by Putin or forced to flee and ordinary Ukrainians subjected to the usual Red Army raping and pillaging. If they have to flee, might as well hand nothing to Russia except rubble and ash. Trump has dangled some nebulous "security guarantees," but after behaving in such an untrustworthy manner, the Ukrainians would be crazy to make concessions based on Trump's promises.
