Earhart Expedition: The Search Continues After Taraia Object Investigation Rules Out Hypothesis [3:51]

The Taraia Object expedition, a joint effort by the Archaeological Legacy Institute, Purdue Research Foundation and Purdue University, found no conclusive evidence to confirm a hypothesis that wreckage from Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed Electra 10-E was in a lagoon on a remote atoll in the South Pacific.

The findings mark a new chapter in the ongoing effort to understand what happened to Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan on her round-the-world flight attempt in 1937.

While the findings rule out one of the latest hypotheses, they also provide valuable information that will help inform future efforts to solve one of aviation’s greatest mysteries.

Not surprised at all, it's debris. They don't show a closeup photo, presumably because they'd make themselves look like ******s. Next time someone investigates this stupid little island looking for Earhart, it should be Geraldo.

Yeah, but they did get an all-expense paid 3 week South Pacific cruise and fresh crab every night. Lucky Ducks.

People around the world have been waiting to hear the results of our investigation here at the Taraia Object site. We can say now, after the conclusion of our work, that the Taraia Object did not or does not represent the wreckage of Amelia Earhart’s Electra aircraft.

Chapter 2: The Taraia Object Instead, we think it’s most likely that the object was a collection of debris that accumulated here.

Chapter 3: What the Evidence Revealed This mystery has been ongoing for 90 years, and the mystery continues. At the same time, the evidence for the castaway hypothesis, which brought us here, remained very, very strong.

Chapter 4: The Mystery Continues We think that it’s very likely that Amelia and her navigator Fred Noonan did, in fact, end up here on Nikumaroro Island. There’s a long list of evidence that supports that conclusion, most of which has been gathered by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, to whom we give credit for that. We are really happy with the teamwork that our group has developed here. I think we accomplished our main goal, which was to come here and test that hypothesis. We followed our game plan. We did the analysis.

Chapter 5: Main Goal

We did the technical accomplished investigation that we intended to do with the remote sensing using magnetometers, sonar and so forth. We did a surface archaeological survey. We set up our technology system, which is currently operating. I think we accomplished our goals completely. The hypothesis has been tested, and the results are in. I think that’s the main outcome of this project. We leave Nikumaroro knowing more than what we did when we came here. As Rick said, I think the team is in great spirits and very proud of what we accomplished.

Chapter 6: Leaving Nikumaroro

With New Knowledge We have always said this was a scientific endeavor. We followed scientific methods to test the hypothesis, and we ruled out one hypothesis. But as he said, it doesn’t detract from the existing, very strong, compelling case for the castaway hypothesis. The island has been holding on to its secrets, and it continues to do so. I think eventually someone will find conclusive evidence here to finally put a cap on the mystery. But for now, we are happy that we were able to accomplish what we did, and we’ll go away proud of the accomplishment. The name “Taraia” itself in the Gilbertese language, the Kiribati language, can mean “see if you can find it.” So we followed that idea to do just that. We came to see what we could find here, to see if it could add a final concluding chapter to the mystery of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan’s disappearance.

Chapter 7: Meaning of the Word “Taraia”

And unfortunately, we weren’t able to find that smoking gun, but I think we’re again proud of what we accomplished. And you know, Amelia herself said, “Adventure is worthwhile in itself.” And I think we’ve lived that out this week with all the trials and tribulations that we had, the things that we’ve had to overcome, and yet be able to follow our Chapter 8: Honoring Amelia, Continuing the Search game plan and follow the evidence to the end. We’re very proud of that, and we leave fulfilled in that sense.

She didn't report being able to see land during her final transmission, which strongly suggests that the plane is somewhere on the ocean floor. The straws the TIGHAR folks have been clutching at for years should be seen as the non-evidence that they truly are. More would be learned if the ocean floor were surveyed -- probably lots to learn, and if the wreckage turns up, bonus.

Taken prisoner and subsequently executed.

The radio comms took place from somewhere.

A compadre on Guam used to collect Coconut crabs and I tried a bite. I’m really not into scavenger meat... but I just had to try to it. Tasted like crab...

There’s a song coming out about the search, from country star Taraia Shwain.

Yeah, okay, that one needs some work. But I’m not getting a grant, I wrote it for free. 😁

The linked video is a con job to try to keep their investors pocketbooks open.

This is the idiot's photo analysis:

Absolutely nothing in this photo has any of the characteristic shapes or designs of parts of an airplane. Probably palm tree trunks blown into the water, got waterlogged and sank in a somewhat cruciate form and they concluded OOH-OOH ... it's an AIRPLANE!

Because of the monocoque structure, if the fuselage were to break up, it almost certainly would break cross-wise rather than length-wise.

The pieces of MH-370 that have been recovered drifted over thousands of miles of open ocean and were dispersed over a span of more than a thousand miles.

The odds that Amelia's Lockheed could have broken up and all of the pieces still be within a few feet of each other after 80 years of being battered by South Pacific surf are one in a trillion.

There was zero chance this could be realistically interpreted as the wreckage of a Lockheed Electra E10.

Investor-paid holiday in the tropics: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

The main object appears to be the remains of an uprooted tree.

Given that many Pacific islands are barely above sealevel and have no human population (for good reason), I'd guess there are a few tree trunks washing ashore. For that matter, some flotsam/jetsam wood material from either refuse haulers or cargo haulers must be somewhat common.

At least this constant pivot from one false hope to another is amusing. 😁

They may have found a volleyball named Wilson on that island...

The ocean is far far bigger then that island so the odds are they ran out of fuel and crashed in the water.

If they made it to that island they they were literally eaten by the crabs.
