Amazon has said it may close more than a dozen warehouses and move thousands of workers out of New York City over a labor bill being pushed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani — and the e-commerce giant is likely to make good on the threat if the controversial legislation is enacted, industry experts told The Post.
The Delivery Protection Act would force Amazon to directly hire upwards of 5,000 delivery workers citywide who are currently employed by third-party contractors. Proponents say the legislation will increase workers’ pay and improve safety conditions at Amazon and other delivery firms including FedEx and DoorDash.
But Amazon doesn’t directly employ delivery workers anywhere else in the country — and has a history of fiercely resisting efforts to change its policies in the US and abroad. The result, according to experts, could be not only that those 5,000 delivery jobs move out of the city, but also that Amazon shutters its 15 last-mile warehouses in the Big Apple and fires the additional 2,000 workers that staff them.
Early last year, Amazon closed seven warehouses in Quebec near Montreal amid a labor fight involving one of its last-mile facilities. The union, Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), had organized the 300 workers at a warehouse in the town of Laval.
By March 2025, some 1,900 Canadians across seven warehouses and 2,800 delivery contractors for those facilities had lost their jobs.
“Amazon will retaliate, because it has to send a firm message to the rest of the country that ‘If you mess with us, this is what will happen,’” said Marc Wulfraat, president and founder of Montreal-based logistics consulting firm, MWPVL International.
“When you look at Amazon’s global operations, they close buildings left, right and center when there is union activity.”

Mandami will of course go running to a foreign born Dumacrat judge.

I’m for Amazon on doing this. Let Mamdani worry about it.
So, according to what Amazon is threatening to do, would last mile warehouses begin popping up in non-NYC locations that are basically within spitting distance of the NYC city line?
Those deliveries still need to be made.
How about adding a NYC surcharge to every order delivered to NYC. Say $25 per order. Let the voters learn a lesson, FAFO!
If only Mamdani had issued Directive 10-289 first, all these job losses could have been avoided...
Last mile warehouse:
From SI: A last-mile warehouse (also called a local distribution center, delivery station, or urban-edge facility) is a small-to-medium industrial building positioned close to population-dense metropolitan areas to handle the final stage of the supply chain.
I didn’t know this term.
Folks can always schlep over to a mall/store and buy their stuff...
‘Folks can always schlep over to a mall/store and buy their stuff...”
Come now, this means they’d have to get off their lazy arses and go do something besides play on some electronic device.
I talked to an officer in the Minnesota NG a few days ago and he said kids from the big cities do not know how to drive. They are so used to having stuff delivered to their front door or using mass transit they feel no need to learn. And when the Army teaches them basic driving they are scared to death.
Didn’t AOC open her big fat mouth on this topic years ago? /s
The issue is never the issue. The objective here is to make the current economic system as unworkable as possible by driving up labor and transport costs, while simultaneously reducing the profit margin of the enterprise so there is essentially no net profit for operations.
If you are not growing, you are dying. A lesson that cannot be hammered through the skulls of those with total dedication to socialism.
“Folks can always schlep over to a mall/store and buy their stuff”
i’m not sure you’re if you’re being sarcastic or not, but 99.99999% of what is sold by amazon is unavailable at local malls [are any still in business?] or local stores ... [btw, not too long ago the local store mantra for something they didn’t carry was: “we can order that for you and it’ll be here in a couple of weeks.”]
Isn’t there already a fee charged for vehicles entering Manhattan?
This will never happen.
How cute people think the Unions are the major impediment.
Amazon will go scorched earth on this due to liability. Amazon uses a corporate delivery structure that pushes all liability to the smallest player on the chain.
If this goes through Amazon will be forced to reexamine its policies that require the delivery drivers to speed and illegally park. When Amazon main office cannot claim we knew nothing when drivers are required to either break traffic laws, violate hours of service regs or fail to complete their delivery route, they will no longer be so much cheaper than the competition.
Bullshit....pure and unadulterated
