CHICAGO (WLS) -- The mother of the woman charged in the fatal stabbing of 7-year-old Eddimar Hernandez says she is sorry for the child's death and believes years of efforts to get her daughter mental health treatment went unanswered.
Speaking by phone and asking that her name and image not be used, the mother of Shavon Gayden said she wanted to express sympathy to Eddimar's family.
"I am so sorry. I am so sorry for that family. The little baby didn't deserve it. My daughter was not in her right mind," she said.
According to police, Gayden approached Eddimar near 86th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue on Saturday morning and stabbed her multiple times in the back.
Surveillance video shows the girl walking with her older sister before bystanders rushed to help, according to police. Police said bystanders held Gayden until officers arrived.
Eddimar was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where she died.
Gayden's mother said she had watched her daughter's mental health decline for more than a decade and struggled to get her help.
"I'm just so upset and I just feel like the system let me down in the system let my daughter down just because she was grown and they told me that it wasn't nothing that I could do," she said.

Every day is another episode of “Why we should lock up mentally ill people”.
Nothing that a couple of rounds of double-ought buck at point-blank range can’t fix...
Trumps fault. Oh, and gas prices.
The “system” didn’t let you down, vile, evil, libtard filth that demanded that all of the mental institutions and incarcerating these dementic psychopaths are the scum responsible for all problems relating to crime, mental illness, and overall mayhem...
Yhe crowd that captured the killer should have had a rope handy to use on a nearby tree or street lamp.
“My daughter was not in her right mind,”
No...decades of coddling criminals is what causes this mal-behavior, and lessening the worth of every citizen.
I would be for open bidding to do the execution work.
Let the Death Penalty be more citizen participative.
Why are we having to pay people to do this? When the penalty is approved, get it done as cheaply as possible.
In 2023, the perp was convicted of assault.
She got probation.
In 2024, she violated her probation involving something she did at a shelter.
An arrest warrant was issued in 2025.
Was she taken into custody?
I don’t know if the perp is legally insane, but if she had been doing time she couldn’t have murdered that child.
You can keep your useless ‘apology’, which at this point almost sounds like bragging.
"Hemp use, particularly products high in THC such as Delta-8 or "skunk" varieties, can trigger a psychotic break in susceptible individuals. While hemp is legally distinct from marijuana in some jurisdictions, many hemp-derived cannabinoids produce psychoactive effects and carry similar risks for psychosis, including paranoia, delusions, and hallucinations." https://www.news-medical.net/health/Cannabis-and-Psychosis.aspx Sources Fergusson, D. George Milton knew what to do with Lennie Small.
That’s very judgmental. There were four previous cases involving the daughter that the legal system didn’t handle right; and the woman says she tried for years to get her daughter help. There is no evidence that the mother was in any way responsible for this, or that she was ‘bragging’.
I didn’t read the story. I thought Madame Stabber was croaking out a faux ‘apology’, having already killed somebody. My mistake.
This is why “treatment” of the seriously mentally is so iffy and we need life-long residential facilities so society can be protected.
I was working in DC when a lot of mental institution patients were given the so-called ‘dignity’ of being turned out on the streets.
Their lives were pitiful, and anything but dignified.
She was already getting “treatment.” Killer drugs.
Along with mass murderers and other nasties. All started with the mental hospitals were closed in the 1970s and the crazies let loose on the streets.
It was the Regan Administration that shut down the mental hospitals. Demented, psychopath, Alzheimer.
Cana-duh knows how to do executions right via the MAID program.
