Far-left New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered an impassioned definition of socialism this week — one critics say rivals state-controlled totalitarianism — claiming in a podcast interview that it’s the job of the government to ensure the masses have “whatever you need.”
“Socialism, to me, it means that you will have whatever you need to live a dignified life and that it is the government’s job to deliver on that,” Hizzoner told comedian podcaster Theo Von on Thursday when asked to define the political and economic system he’s pushing on the city.
“It’s a belief that you shouldn’t live in a place where all you can do is pick your own leaders,” added the card-carrying Democratic Socialists of America member.
“You should also be able to have that power in the rest of your life, right? People talk about it as the extension of democracy from the ballot box to the rest of your life.
“What do people mean by the rest of your life? They mean your workplace, your home, things like that.”
“When people say dignity, I want to be very clear, we’re talking about the things that allow you to take a breath: housing, childcare, public transit,” the mayor said. “No one should be priced out of these things. These are non-negotiables; you need these to live.”
City Council Minority Leader David Carr (R-Staten Island) said Mamdani’s definition of socialism “sounds a lot like” state-controlled “totalitarianism.”
“I can’t imagine even his most ardent supporters would want to live in a state where the government determines everything you need to live a dignified life, whatever that is,” said Carr.
Other critics scoffed at Mamdani’s remarks, telling The Post Saturday that the mayor’s tax-the-rich, anti-capitalist agenda is pie-in-the-sky planning that is driving investors, residents and businesses out...

“Dignity” is small, out-of-the-way, non-intrusive, government that lets you live your life in peace without oppressive, overbearing, smothering rules & regs beating you into submission.
Will he force people to work in order for them to receive “the things they need”?
No, of course not. People should not have to work in order to have the bare essentials.
How will these “bare essentials” be paid for?
The government will provide these things to the people.
How will the government obtain resources that it needs in order to provide for people?
The government will force Normal people to work, and to pay taxes. These bourgeoisie losers and racists and Nazis will have to work and pay taxes so that sensitive people can survive and live lives of dignity.
Exactly.
Will he force people to work in order for them to receive “the things they need”?
No, of course not. People should not have to work in order to have the bare essentials.
Yes he will. That’s how Communism works. The Soviet Union had “Anti-Parasite” Laws, which meant people found not working in the middle of the day could be arrested or forced to work at some menial job.
Just like the Kenyan usurper Obeyme.
100%
I should have specified — socialism/communism is “sold” on the idea that your basic needs will be met, and that no one should be forced to work in order to have their basic needs met.
But after the “sale” is made, the people find out that canals need to be dug, frozen wastelands need to be exploited, important politicians need new mansions, etc. “Come on, Comrade! You must do your part!”

Despite plenty of film archives from the glory days of the early Berlin wall, you won’t convince the fidiots they’re headed down a long and dirty road. Not everyone gets to be ‘block captain’.
“Noo” Socialism equals Old Communism!
Mamidaimi has no genuine idea of what he is talking about. He is in over his head.
When socialists gain power they don’t leave people walking around who may be a risk to their agenda.
“Need”; “dignified”; we’ll decide.
“What do you need? How did you vote?”
That's because it is.
