The American presenter Tucker Carlson has claimed Britain would have been better off losing the Second World War to an incredulous Jacob Rees-Mogg – but says he is not a Nazi supporter.
The US commentator was widely mocked after his most recent episode of the Tucker Carlson show, featuring former Tory minister Mr Rees-Mogg, aired last night.
In the online show, Mr Carlson claimed Britain 'destroyed their empire and their country fighting this war that they still pretend was a good idea but it wasn't'.
The former Fox News presenter – who once described Darryl Cooper, a Holocaust denier, as 'the best and most popular historian in the United States' – asked Mr Rees-Mogg if the UK had benefited from fighting the Second World War.
He then asked if Britain was 'a better country than it was' after winning the war.
Mr Rees-Mogg replied that the Second World War represented 'the classic good versus evil' war and said that 'we did the right thing'.
He said Britain was a better country 'to have defeated Hitler' and that 'otherwise we'd be speaking German'.
Mr Carlson then said that there are a 'lot of people' who are unable to speak English in Britain, arguing it would 'at least be nice' to have a 'European language' spoken in the UK if Germany had won the war.

Both sides committed genocides.
Chatsworth is, as always, good for laughs. It is a mystery to me -- and to his own ego in exact equal measure -- why anyone takes him seriously.
Bow tie = clown shoes.
Not really. He viewed them as useful tools but racially inferior.
You think Europe would've been home to countless millions Africans and Arabs had Hitler won?
We'd probably be mining the moons of Saturn today had the Nazis prevailed.
Proving once again that Tucker ain’t too bright. 😉
Nazi Europe would have been subject to decay like every other society. It might have taken a different form, but they were unlikely to remain dynamic and advancing for 3-4 generations.
And would a slave society, like Hitler’s empire, really have opposed importing foreign labor, so long as it was kept under tight control?
All Tucker does these days is take wild pot-shots to try and get some attention.
I think you are right: Rees-Mogg is just repeating the tired old cliché of „we would be speaking German“. (Sir Jacob, who is a man of erudition, really ought to refrain from using cheap slogans better suited to an alehouse than to a serious debate).
There is absolutely no proof that the Nazis would have foisted the German language upon the British. The regimes allied with Hitler had, of course, diplomats and interpreters who spoke German as go-betweens - but definitely not the ordinary people.
However, the problem with Hitler was that he had broken his promise to the Czechs, British and French that he would be content with Austria and the Sudetenland, as would have been arguable on the grounds of the right of self-determination - though, in practice, that would have fitted Germanophone Austria better than the Lands of the Bohemian Crown, which had been inhabited by two peoples since the High Middle Ages (or, as some have argued, one people which happens to speak two different languages).
Another matter was the annexation/return of the Memelland the same month of March 1939 (though there had been no plebiscite after 1919 either, just as there hadn’t been one in the Sudetenland, in South Tyrol et al.).
The eyes of the world were watching, however, after March 1939…and London, Paris and Warsaw had grown suspicious. With due reason. 😔
Still, had Hitler died early in 1939, he might have been regarded today as Mao is in China: 70% good, 30% bad, or thereabouts.
Still, we can simply not know what would have happened (I, for instance, would certainly have been euthanized as „unworthy of life“, due to my handicap).
Take Christianity: Nazism was decidedly anti-Christianity, until the war came and comfort was needed for those who mourned. In the USSR, the situation of the Orthodox Churches during 1941-45 improved vastly, but after the victory, religious expression was suppressed once more.
We can never know for sure: history is, after all, a chaotic system - not all of it, but to a large extent.
It was possible for the British Empire to stay out of it.
The Americans could have focused their war effort on Japan instead.
I don’t think there would have been any Third World immigration allowed, true.
Still, there would surely be, as Mr. X implied, be other issues- maybe just as deleterious as the Dark invasion…
We simply can’t know exactly.
The very best thing might have been reforms after the demise of the first generation leaders as Hitler or Mussolini and their ilk.
After all, there were reforms in the USSR after Stalin was gone, just as there were reforms in China after the departure of the Great Helmsman, or in Spain and Portugal after Franco and Salazar had passed.
But what would have happened in the years until then?
Yes, that’s what I would have presumed, too.
As similar as the practices of both regimes were, as irreconcilable were the theoretical principles upon which they were based.
However, had Hitler not been the utter madman that he was, a Soviet victory might not have been a foregone conclusion.
Assuming we'll send the supplies to the Soviets but Hitler won't dare to attack Britain and USA.
But that move would probably provoke Hitler into declaring war.
Yes, and what an utter tragedy this was 😟
If only a single one of the 42 of the attempts on Hitler‘s life had succeeded (we can always dream, can’t we?) the loss of Poland and the rest of Eastern Europe to communism might well not have happened.
Among other wonderful things, i.e. that millions of people would not have had to die, and others would not have been expelled from their homes, works of art could have been saved, probably world communism would not have ascended to a position of power as it did in fact etc.
bump
Certainly, in a similar fashion as happened in our timeline. I mean the entry of America into the conflict.
Hitler had to make the same experience as the Sun King of France, and later Napoleon: for a while, you can bully and coerce your neighbor nations at your pleasure if you’re strong enough- but after a while, they will all form an alliance against you.
Tucker should get a real job.
He probably would need training to make fries
Sorry for signing off now, but it’s really late over here, and I had a dreadful day today.
But it was my utter pleasure 🙂 participating in this debate.
Tucker has completely lost his mind. I stopped watching quite a while ago.
Chickens for KFC.
