Leawood Police Department officers in Kansas noticed a dog in the middle of the street with no owner in sight, and it started barking at them.

An officer approached the pup and said, "Hi, why don’t you go on back home?"

The officers followed the dog back to its home, where police say the owner had fallen and been on the ground for more than 3 hours.

"Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed… The resident was treated by medical personnel and is now recovering safely at home."

Dogs are incredible, aren’t they? But my cat sometimes shows me how he dug up my plant and/or knocked the planter over.

Go ahead and sex the person on the ground.

“Them” is incorrect and plural.

“She” or “He” is correct and singular.

There was only one person on the ground.

They say nothing about the sex at all. The only “them” are the police. There easily could have been plural officers

Is this sentence grammtically correct if only one person is on the ground?

Yes, the sentence is grammatically correct even if only one person is on the ground.

Here’s the sentence again for reference:

Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed…

Why it’s fine:

So referring to one person with “them” and “they” is standard and correct. If you want to make it more traditional/explicitly singular:You could rewrite it as:But there’s no grammatical error in the original version.

In my dating history I’ve learned that when one person in a comitted relationship refers to a specific someone outside the relationship as a vague “they”, or “them”, that person is avoiding the actual sex of the they/them to hide the sex and obfuscate some nefarious behavior; usually infidelity.

“I was talking to someone and they said...”
“I was out with a friend. I just had a drink with them”

This is more commonly known as lying.
Buh-bye!

But, that’s only a personal historical observation, which far predates the twisted and perverse homosexual application of they/them. Lying is also perverse.

YMMV
...not you EPU specifically

The ‘singular they’ was common in English long before the whole ‘trans’ issue arrived.

People love to complain about it as if it’s something new and due solely to the trans ‘fashion’.

Speaking of “they” —

It’s always that nebulous, anonymous “they” who is responsible yet seemingly unaccountable for all of the trouble in this world.

Nameless perpetrators, even though “they” are named right in the Megillah, the scroll alternately known as the “revelation of the hidden”:

הם\ן

Everyone knows what really happens to Haman [& Sons] — *they* receive their just reward.

Why does the dog’s sex matter?
