If you think the lift to the top of The Shard is a long ride, spare a thought for future visitors to Dubai's Burj Azizi.
The skyscraper will feature a staggering 2,071ft (631.5m) continuous elevator journey – the equivalent of 140 floors – making it one of the longest single lift rides on Earth.
KONE, the company behind the technology, says a new generation of AI-powered, lightweight elevators is helping make such record-breaking journeys possible.
And it said its design could one day carry passengers more than a kilometre into the sky.
‘What was once considered a futuristic vision for cities is steadily becoming reality, with skylines reaching beyond a kilometre in height,’ Philippe Delorme, President and CEO of KONE, said.
‘Multi-use buildings such as the Burj Azizi are leading the way in supertall cities, seamlessly integrating living, working, hospitality, retail, and other services.
‘KONE's new high-rise solutions are the answer to our customers’ ever-evolving urban needs and a remarkable milestone for our industry.’
While skyscrapers have transformed dramatically over the last century, most elevators still rely on the same basic traction principles developed more than 150 years ago.
That poses a major problem for architects hoping to push buildings higher into the sky.
As towers rise, the steel ropes used to lift elevator cars become increasingly heavier. Eventually their sheer weight becomes a limiting factor, with traditional systems typically topping out at around 1,600ft (500m) of travel.
To tackle the problem, KONE has combined a number of advanced technologies including wireless power transmission, wireless data transfer, AI-powered traffic management systems and ultra-lightweight hoisting ropes.
The company says the innovations will allow elevators to travel higher than ever before while using less energy and fewer construction materials.

"Dubai's Burj Azizi is expected to become one of the tallest buildings on Earth. When completed, the tower will feature a single elevator journey measuring 2,000ft (631.5m)"
Shades of Arthur C. Clarke’s elevator to space...
Hope they’ve got insurance.
“””And it said its design could one day carry passengers more than a kilometre into the sky. “”””
Also shades of the Tower of Babel.
We don’t have to wait for a tall building to show Man’s contempt for God’s will. :(
Think 911.
It’s like building a Popeye’s in a black neighborhood. You just know it’s gonna get robbed.
We’ll show those Tower of Babel people how it’s really done.
You don’t have to go back to 9-11. Think yesterday. Reminder that yesterday it was a Fly Dubai plane that had a pilot stab another pilot. Will an elevator operator in Dubai stab another operator high up in the sky?
There is a fleet of sewage trucks that has to service the Burj Khalifa everyday because they did not hook up with a sewage system to take care of all that human waste . That and other problems have made that tower a giant money losing headache. I hope the people behind this new tower have more reasonable planners...but I doubt it .
WHY!!!!!!
Islamoland is anything but secular. They prey to God 5 times a day and are serious enough about their religion to do all kinds of evil in its name. Clearly an example of a faith gone truly bad . I believe Jesus himself warned us about Islam.
Matthew 7:15 : Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
yep, I also believe Jesus was specifically warning about future Islam.
You ask why they need to build humongously tall buildings like this in Dubai???
It’s because they only have another 32,000 square miles of undeveloped land in the UAE to spread out in.
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, mevery healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Can there be ANY doubt that Jesus was referring to the future Muslims?
In all of human history after Jesus, no other organization more perfectly fits his warning.
The Tower of Babel people have already seen
Absolutely! What has Jesus done for mankind? His teaching eventually ended slavery over most of the world. Where does slavery still exist? In Islamoland where Allah gives it two thumbs up!
Lots of people on the Left hate Christ and find all kinds of problems with Him but almost never look at all of the good that came out of what he said.
The “religion of peace” that has done nothing but murder, rape and pillage for the last 1,400 years.
a wolf in sheeps clothing can be no better descriptor.
