US federal workforce drops to lowest level in 60 years after Trump purged hundreds of thousands of employees

The US federal workforce has plunged to about 2.7 million employees under the Trump administration — the lowest level in 60 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The government has shed more than 300,000 workers since President Trump returned to office in January 2025, shrinking the federal workforce by about 11%, according to the latest analysis from the BLS.

The majority of the cuts occurred in the first year of Trump’s second term, with federal employment remaining at a consistent level through 2026.

Active military personnel — which number about 1.35 million — and employees at America’s intelligence agencies — about 100,000 more employees — were not counted in the monthly assessment.

The federal workforce surges during Census years — it hit 3.4 million in 2010 and nearly 3.2 million in 2020.

But it previous hit a non-Census 30-year high of more than 3 million in January 2025, just as Trump was taking office.

Trump campaigned on a promise to shrink the federal government, with the president giving Elon Musk, the richest man on Earth, free reign to purge employee payrolls to find savings under his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The cuts hit nearly every major federal agency, with the Departments of Education, Agriculture and Housing and Urban Development.

The Department of Homeland Security was a notable exception, with headcount barely changing since Trump took office and rolled out his anti-immigration policies.

The biggest cuts occurred at the end of September 2025, when more than 150,000 federal employees accepted buyouts from the government, resulting in the largest single-year exodus of civil servants in nearly 80 years.

Despite the downsizing, the government has yet to see any notable savings.

“The US federal workforce has plunged to about 2.7 million employees under the Trump administration”. Isn’t the federal workforce there to help us?

GDP

While Fed.gov workforce has shrunk, Fed.gov is spending more than ever as a percentage of GDP (except for Covid.)

And that increase is ALL on entitlements and healthcare.

We dont need millions to do what thousands can do. Ask yourself do they help us?

Let’s hope most of them are in the D.C. area where they’ll have to sell their homes. Then move what’s left to other cities across the US. All those lost votes.

Next-restore D.C. to it’s original boundaries. That would eliminate Arlington voters. Do it before the 2030 census and Virginia becomes red.

2030’s. The decade will be all ours.

There are about 750K more federal jobs that still need to be cut, but this is a good start.

Personal experience has me convinced that there is only 1 person left at the division of IRS tasked with answering tax payer questions.

Don’t know that that graph is but, this isn’t the lowest and deductive reasoning would challenge the math on this.

Just in 2010 the workforce was 2.17 million

In 1997 the workforce was 1.9 million according to the GAO report of 1999 https://www.gao.gov/assets/ggd-99-57.pdf page 4, last paragraph.

in the GAO report I list above, it is primarily due to wage increases in very short periods

For instance, between 1993-1997 the wages increased in two categories described more than $11,000 for one, and nearly $7,000 for the other.

That is a hell of an increase for givernment workers at that period in time, morever in just 4 years.

The current average annual pay across the entire federal workforce is $106,382 excluding other benefits

How do you like them apples?

They earn, on average, 33% more than the average American citizen....and I’ll bet they are 70% less effective
