Piece linked unpainted nails to class and racial stigma before widespread backlash prompted an editorial
The BBC removed an article that suggested the trend of leaving fingernails unpainted could perpetuate "White supremacist" beauty standards after it drew backlash Saturday.
The original article, "How the bare nails trend became a class issue," explored the beauty trend of women preferring clear and polished "naked" nails over the more stylish nail designs over the past few years.
The BBC reported that while some consider this trend part of the ever-shifting standards in fashion, critics suggested the image said "something about class" and could potentially stigmatize Black, Latino and Asian communities that popularized heavily designed nails.
"That trend really promotes blankness and this kind of sameness and erasure of culture and identity that is so important to [B]lack and [B]rown communities," beauty journalist Kristina Rodulfo told the BBC.
"They are often called elegant or tasteful, and these are often usually euphemisms that perpetuate [W]hite supremacist standards of beauty."
The article quickly drew widespread criticism for linking nail design to racism or class warfare.
"Such a stupid, pointless article. And to think the salary of whoever wrote it is paid by a levy on anyone in this country who watches live TV. Indefensible," Sex Matters Director of Advocacy Helen Joyce wrote on X.

And let's not even mention how racist you are if you don't have a bunch of tattoos. Ideally a sleeve or both. And something around your neck.

What if you’re male and have painted fingernails? Or unpainted? Or no nails because you keep hitting them while hammering?
The worst part is I have thick toenails.
Sometimes I use a pair of dykes to clip them.
Please don’t tell any big lesbians that I still call my pliers ‘dykes’.
Otherwise, I just clip my nails. No paint. I guess I’m a racist.
I have always associated fanciful painted nails with crass conspicuous consumption, a nonverbal proclamation of “Look, I don’t have to do manual labor.”
Whites are racist no matter what we do or don’t do. I’ve been sick of it for a long time now.
Tried out a newly opened restaurant recently, only to have a waiter (man pretending to be a woman) who’s nails were not only painted but also had glued on sequins.
All I could think was “How many has he lost in someone’s food?”
Not sure where that lands on the “racism/sexism” scale.
Doubt the place will be open for long.

I’ve associated fancy painted nails with trashy bimbos.
And talk about conspicuous consumption ... tattoos and complicated ‘dos. It seems there’s a direct correlation between how many food stamps are used at checkout and how many expensive procedures the user has spent money on.
(And has any one of them turned around to us and said, “Thank you for letting me steal your money so I can live my life”?)
