Sharon Jacks went to Selby General Hospital in September 2025 for a planned below-the-knee amputation of her right leg, according to a 32-page complaint filed on her behalf. The lawsuit alleges her left leg was removed instead.
Jacks’ attorney, Brad Layne, said the error left his client a double amputee after doctors later had to remove the leg that was originally scheduled for surgery.
“She went into surgery, and when she woke up, the wrong leg had been taken off. Yeah, it defies explanation, obviously,” he said.
According to the complaint, Jacks’ right leg required amputation because of cancer. But the complaint alleges the surgical team removed her left leg during the September procedure.
Layne said his review of the medical records indicates the surgeon initially marked the correct leg before the operation.
“The surgeon actually marked the correct leg pre-surgery. The mark was still on the correct leg after the wrong leg had been taken off,” Layne said.
Selby General Hospital sent the following statement to 10TV:
“In September 2025, an adverse surgical event occurred at Selby General Hospital. At that time, our team responded immediately to address the medical needs of the patient involved and provide support to their family.
Our proactive review of what took place confirmed this was an avoidable event, and that our expected operating room procedures were not followed. Those involved were held accountable for their actions and are no longer in their positions.

An Air Force Academy cadet got an Article 15 (nonjudicial punishment) back in the day for writing “other knee” on the non-operated leg prior to surgery. Arrogant SOB surgeon couldn’t take a joke.

I think I get your drift. Not sure if it would be a nurse or a tech. Could be someone new and inexperienced, or under the influence, or rushed, or careless, or even illiterate.

Really funny, but also sick...
Each time I have surgery, I talk to the team whike I’m in the OR to make sure I know what they’re doing (I do this by asking questions about the procedure I’m supposed to have - i.e.: “So, with a kidney transolant, should I expect X, Y, and Z?”).
If it’s a limb, I do write with a sharpie on the opposite one, “Not this one.” Usually they find it humorous, but my hospitals are the best in my state.
She has a massive lawsuit ahead of her.
Was the poor victim a MAGA person? What one reads about some nurses is they have no qualms about deliberate adverse actions against MAGA.
Nurse, reading it aloud to the surgeon: "It says, 'Not this one!'"
Surgeon: "What else?"
Nurse: "Just 'Not this one!'"
Surgeon: "'Not just this one?' Okay, I understand! Team, prepare for a double amputation!"

One job...they had one job. This will ruin what’s left of her life.
At the local university hospital they ask you to repeat your name and birthdate every time you are handed off to the next clinician. One time they caught the fact that I was in the restroom when my name was called and another guy thought he heard his own name.
