Sharon Jacks went to Selby General Hospital in September 2025 for a planned below-the-knee amputation of her right leg, according to a 32-page complaint filed on her behalf. The lawsuit alleges her left leg was removed instead.
Jacks’ attorney, Brad Layne, said the error left his client a double amputee after doctors later had to remove the leg that was originally scheduled for surgery.
“She went into surgery, and when she woke up, the wrong leg had been taken off. Yeah, it defies explanation, obviously,” he said.
According to the complaint, Jacks’ right leg required amputation because of cancer. But the complaint alleges the surgical team removed her left leg during the September procedure.
Layne said his review of the medical records indicates the surgeon initially marked the correct leg before the operation.
“The surgeon actually marked the correct leg pre-surgery. The mark was still on the correct leg after the wrong leg had been taken off,” Layne said.
Selby General Hospital sent the following statement to 10TV:
“In September 2025, an adverse surgical event occurred at Selby General Hospital. At that time, our team responded immediately to address the medical needs of the patient involved and provide support to their family.
Our proactive review of what took place confirmed this was an avoidable event, and that our expected operating room procedures were not followed. Those involved were held accountable for their actions and are no longer in their positions.

I had surgery done on my right shoulder. I wrote in ink on my left shoulder, “WRONG SHOULDER.”

Well then I’m stumped.

LOL. Uh, yeah. This hospital sounds like its right out of Idiocracy.
Whenever I hear about one of these surgical screw-ups, I’m just amazed how that could even happen. Even my rural hospital, where everybody knows each other, wrote on me with a marker. When I asked them why, they said it was standard procedure.
This guy had to go into surgery and have his leg amputated.
After completion, in recovery, the doc asked how he was?
Man: I suppose I’m doing fine given the circumstances.
Doc: Well, that’s good. However, I have some good news to tell you and some bad news.
Man: WHAT?!
Doc: Yes, sorry to tell. I must inform you. Now which do you wanna hear first? The good news or the bad news?
Man: Goodness gracious doc. I guess, give me the bad first. Can’t be that bad.
Doc: Well it is. I’m sorry to inform you that we cut the wrong leg off.
Man: oh my gosh, oh my gosh. Now what good can cone outta this! Tell me!
Doc: The good news is that your other leg is doing just fine!
This is what I was going to say. I had a pretty serious injury to my left arm, requiring a total of six surgeries. Before each one, the surgeon wrote his initials on the arm, even though it was pretty obvious which one which one was to be worked on.
Doesn’t anyone else in the room look for the marks and watch what is happening?
I have no idea if it’s the case here. But I once read a book written by a nurse. She said you’d be surprised at how many surgeons show up for work at least slightly drunk.
And of course no “lowly” nurse would be taken seriously if she filed a complaint with the hospital.
I know a Dr that lost his license. Operating Under the Influence.

By the time the surgeon shows up, the surgical site is draped and disinfected. No exc, though. The one who prepped her ignored the markings and the surgeon neglected to look for the markings.
