A University of Georgia student was seriously injured on Saturday night when she fell out of a window.

Athens police say a student was dancing on a couch near an open window on the eighth floor of the Rambler Athens on W. Broad Street.
That’s when they say she fell out of the window and landed on the pool deck.
Police say she is conscious and alert, but is seriously injured.
Her name has not been released.
Channel 2 Action News obtained a statement sent out by the apartment complex to residents. It reads:
Dear Residents, We want to provide an update regarding the incident at our community last night. A resident fell from an open window and was transported by emergency medical services. We understand they are at the hospital for treatment.
We are working with authorities who are continuing to gather information surrounding what occurred. Our thoughts are with the resident and their family, and we ask that everyone respect their privacy during this time.
As a reminder, windows throughout the community are equipped with safety limiters. For your safety, please do not tamper with, remove or disengage these devices. If you have a concern with a window or safety limiter, please contact the management team for assistance.

What could possibly go wrong?
Maybe that’s what happened, some partygoer decided to remove any fixed screen at the open window. Who knows why? Maybe somebody was pulling up a wicker basket full of beers from the ground floor outside the building. Very sad for the girls family. She’s lucky to still be alive, but is likely to be at least partially paralyzed.
I’m glad she survived.

"33 ft per second" would be a speed, and not an acceleration.
The correct value (of g) is 32 ft per second2.
Inputting your estimate of "x = 80 ft," we get (discounting air friction) a free-fall time of 2.24 seconds.
Starting from rest (v = 0 ft/sec), after 2.24 seconds, your velocity will have increased to 32 ft per second2 * 2.24 seconds = 71.5 ft per sec = roughly 48 miles per hour.

I suspect an 8 (or more) story building is relatively new and the floors are more than 10 feet, especially the first floor. They, belay that, she wouldn’t have been at the ceiling, so subtract a few feet.
A squirrel or cat would spread out to increase air friction. Let’s hope she didn’t flap her arms.
Although, it’s been decades since I got hammered and danced on the couch in front of a large window, (actually, I have never done that) I am now making note:

Her landing may have been softened by impacts with trees or shrubs.
Maybe she should teach her technique to those friends of Putin who tend to fall out of windows.
I don’t care how close to the window she was, that was still a freak accident falling out of it after slipping off the couch. 9 times out of 10 she hits the wall next to the window. That is a freak accident.
Meanwhile, I guess God has other plans for her to keep her alive after falling 80 feet, hitting who knows what on the way down. That as lucky as an unlucky person can get.
Is there a word for “fear of couches” because she going to suffer from that from now on.
That said, a lot of people die having fun or pursuing fun. It is terrible but it is not uncommon.
It certainly wasn’t on concrete. That’s for sure.
