I am sick and tired of the left’s war on data centers. Hey leftist idiot jerks, if you use a mobile device such as your phone, do any online searching, visit any website, have a bank account, or basically interact with the modern world in any way, a data center is not just involved but essential.
So the two major Trojan horses are (a) water use and (b) electrical costs.
Let’s address each in turn.
(a) Water use: Data centers recycle their water. A massive data center fills up with about as much water as two hotel swimming pools. Then recycles. That’s it. No significant more water use.
(b) Electrical costs: Most data centers have their own power generation. Why? Simple economics. It’s cheaper than buying power off the grid.
I don’t talk about this much but I have a graduate degree in engineering and have actually helped build out data centers. That part of my career is in the past - have moved on to other things - but I’ve actually been there, done that.
Data centers should be called job centers. Install creates a lot of jobs. Support maintains many including in surrounding businesses.
Data center hysteria by the leftidiots is the modern version of global warming hysteria. Aren’t we all supposed to be dead now per Al Gore? Sheesh.

Everything is a fashion industry. The current fashion is data centers. Last year it was something else, and next year it will be something else.
Is investment in the fashion industry a good idea? place your bets.
They also suck up available credit, causing interest rates to be higher for homebuyers and the US Treasury.
Do I need data centers to be sending evermore massive amounts of data for every webpage I visit, slowing my PC down and using up my 12GB/30-days of hotspot data?

Heck I have a horrible credit rating because of some failed attempts at some startup businesses (over 90% of startups fail - I’m part of the majority there). But still get decent credit card offers weekly.

A) Do all data centers recycle cooling water?
B) Do all data centers generate their own electricity?
Our center had four giant Cummins diesel generators. The local power corporation had a reciprocal agreement with us where in their peak load times they would crank up our generators, trip a telemetry switch, to sell our power back into their grid.

You do make a good point about the hardware. We import a LOT. Why? We have stringent environmental regulations. Not necessarily a bad thing. China doesn’t. And making chips etc. involves a lot of nasty chemicals. They just dump the toxic waste into the environment. So cheaper. And as a business you buy cheapest or die.
BTW I can almost guarantee the device you are personally using right now to post here has parts made in China.

They use alot of both, regardless of sources. Setting that aside, there are some, myself included, who want nothing to do with the Brave New World that is upon us, and which is driven by these things. I am ‘conservative’, traditional, and fiercely patriotic, and have a very, very bad feeling about the future that’s taking shape. “AI” can be an awesome tool for good. But that’s not what it’s going to be used for, and that’s not why data centers are needed.
Data centers suck up land. They employ far fewer people than most realize. They are used to store and maintain surveillance data.

And yes, we have to be careful and not just release it out into the world.

The sad fact is, there are groups of people out there who are completely unhinged over Artificial Intelligence. They fall into a variety of groups.
Some are simply fearful of the huge changes that AI is the vanguard of. This happens with every momentous technology and social change in history. It is nothing new.
Some are afraid of the changes because it will change the workforce. This is also nothing new. When automobiles came on the scene, the hysteria surrounding automobiles rivals what we see with AI. Automobiles will kill us all. They are dangerous. They are noisy. People working in the buggy whip industry will lose their jobs. Stable hands will lose their jobs. Companies that sell horse supplies will lose their jobs. People who clean horse poop will lose their jobs. Farriers will lose their jobs. People who buy and sell horses will lose their jobs. And look what happened.
Some want to control AI so it does what they want, not what AI, if managed well, can and will do. Dan Bongino says often that the reason Leftists are so terrified of AI (such as Elizabeth Warren) and want to highly regulate it is because they are fearful that AI will...tell the truth. And he is right. If people grow to trust AI, they will assume it tells the truth. Right now, if you want to see if a particular point put out by Democrats is true, you can do it using a search engine, but...you might have to wade through ten straight pages, go into the individual web sites, glean the important information, collate it in your mind, and reach a conclusion. AI can do that for you. This is important.
I realized that my surfing habits have changed. I am using Grok to find information, instead of a search engine. And Grok presents me with where it got the information, so I can look at the individual websites. I still have to explore them individually to ensure it is telling me the truth. But I am cutting out the putrid search engines. This is a sea change. It greatly increases the efficiency of my personal quest for knowledge or information. I was looking for a picture of the Marco Rubio “job responsibility” meme that show him sitting on the couch with his face on Karoline Leavitt’s body and her long blonde hair. I could not find it using a search engine. I asked Grok, and it showed me in one pass, 10 seconds, something I had been searching for over the space of 10 minutes. And that is simply one example.
And we must keep in mind-Communist China has two great advantages over us that are inherent due to our open society: They can (and do) learn from and steal intellectual property directly, and have even used it to have their own AI learn from ours. Secondly, they can (and are) pumping money into our nation’s free society, paying their allies and people with influence (including politicians) to inhibit the exploration and development of AI, and are attacking on all fronts via planted negative propaganda with great success. They are attacking data center construction in all aspects to foster domestic resistance at all levels to data centers in local, state, and federal government levels. They are pumping money and influence into universities and even religious institutions to foster intellectual resistance in a free and open society.
We in the United States do not have the option of doing either of those things in Communist China. But they are spending great time and energy to these ends with great success. And this is how they hope to catch up and surpass us. Even better for them if it is outlawed or severely inhibited in its development in the rest of the world, but particularly in the US. And who in this country is fully invested in keeping AI from reaching its true potential? The American Left including the Democrat Party, and that is by no means an accident.
We do not have a choice. This technology is going to be used or both good and evil. Communist China is going to do great evil with it, and we have to protect ourselves...and it is going to take good AI to protect ourselves from the evil AI that Communist China will surely leverage.
And yes. I DO view it as a black and white, Manichean choice. We do not have the option of “outlawing” it. This is a fight we must take part in and win.
Note by being on the Internet and playing on FreeRepublic you are using\on a data center. All data centers could be used for surveillance! Nothing special about AI centers for surveillance other then the scary letters AI.
The left knows that if people have access to logical information, they lose. Hence, they MUST have control of the Internet, just like they had with the Facebook, Instgram, Twitter, TikTok... monopoly. Free speech would be the death of them and they know it. They need dependency and brainwashing to stay in business. Jobs from data center construction and maintenance and American production trickling down to small business are their enemies.
Hence, make data centers a thing to fear. Fear sells, especially to AWFULs.
Sorry to break it to you, but as long as there have been computers, there have been data centers. All large businesses used to have on-site data centers. Then, due primarily for security and disaster recovery purposes, companies began using off-site data centers. Eventually the "cloud" became the repository of choice not only for business, government, and medical data, but for individual consumers to save their photos and other personal files. As the need for all this data storage increased, so did the need for data centers. Point being they are not new. They are not scary, and they serve a vital purpose in our modern world.
