California’s growing number of wild wolves killed or injured dozens of farm animals across the state in 2026, so far, according to the latest report from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The CDFW updated its Wolf-livestock Depredation Investigations and Determinations report on Sept. 21. Of the 137 livestock depredation investigations performed this year, CDFW officials determined that 68 were wolf-related.
“The goal of LDIs is to determine the cause of the animal’s injury or death,” the CDFW said. “LDIs involve assessment of physical and circumstantial evidence. Trained investigators examine the carcass or injured animal and search for signs of an attack (e.g., premortem bites and tissue hemorrhage, evidence of a chase and struggle, etc.), as well as conditions potentially unrelated to predation, such as disease or prior injury.”
Cows and calves represented an overwhelming majority of the livestock killed or injured by wolves across California. However, the report also recorded wolf attacks that involved four alpacas, one horse, and seven lambs or sheep.

Wolves were everywhere there was prey.
There were very few in California. Virtually none were seen by Lewis and Clark in Yellowstone. Guess why?

There’s a reason why wolves were eradicated in the west.
Despite its large population, California has lots of open space. Along Interstate 5, the main route between Los Angeles and the Bay Area, there's a 300-mile stretch where you won't pass through any cities or towns save Kettleman City and Santa Nella, which are essentially wide spots on the road. Highway 101 between Santa Barbara and San Jose, Rte. 166 between Santa Maria and Taft, Rte. 395 from Adelanto to Carson City, and other highways in California will also take you through miles and miles of empty, uninhabited countryside.
Wolves kill elk and other animals including cattle for food. Humans kill elk and other animals including cattle for food. OK. I got it.
I used to work in Santa Nella. We had bumper stickers that said “Where the Hell is Santa Nella”.
I’ve stayed in Santa Nella a couple of times, although when I go upstate, I usually stay in Turlock. I’ve eaten at Anderson’s in Santa Nella, which is famous for its pea soup, but I don’t know if it’s stil there.

I've read the same thing. Male mountain lions are the only ones documented. No den activity has been discovered yet, so there doesn't appear to be any sustainable population in the northeastern states at present.
People need to understand the knock on effects of large scale removal of natural predators, particularly apex predators from certain areas.
For example, it’s well documented that that the starvation of Mule Deer in the Kaibab Plateau during the earlier part of the 20th century was in large part due to hunting and reduction of their natural predators. Combine that with drought in the 1920s and there were conditions for a large scale starvation of mule deer.

There is an active California Wolf Project (CAWP) led by researchers at UC Berkeley’s Rausser College of Natural Resources in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) trying to advance the science, conservation, and management of gray wolves as they naturally re-colonize California.
Gray wolves in California were systematically hunted, trapped, and poisoned into extinction by the early 20th century to protect livestock and clear the landscape for agricultural settlement. Now they want to put them back with a noted increase in livestock and taking the range away from them for agricultural advancement while exterminating, or hunting their food sources. In the 1800’s their diet was of elk, mule deer, rabbits and other small animals the ranchers are now cutting into those populations. Of course there is going to be a conflict as to the loss of animals. But they have to make up their minds. If they’re going to try to bring them back, then they will have to pay the price for protecting their possible food sources that were available at the time they exterminated them that the state people wish to make flurish now.

I doubt your statement is true. California outlawed mountain lion hunting some years ago.
Mountain lions average a deer a week.
If the deer are indeed “harvesting” rural gardens and yards, it is because the lions and the wolves are killing them in their home territories.

The die off of the mule deer on the Kaibab was due to the elimination of deer hunting. Subsequently, the deer herd continued to grow, thereby out growing the carrying capacity of the area.
The philosophy was to “let nature take its course”.
When the drought hit, the deer died to lack of forage.
Removal of apex predators had a significant impact, I believe more than deer hunting.
Humans can not and are not taking care of the White Tail deer infestation. In my neighborhood that is adjacent to a small city of around 60,000 people and all over the eastern United States the deer have adapted to live literally within the suburban human habitat.
This morning there were two of this years cop in my back yard. These two are merely a part of a larger group that consists of from 6 to 10 individuals. The group includes 4 to 6 of this years crop one or two of last years crops and 2 or 3 does.
Such groups are notorious all over. They live right where I do. They have adapted to living in my yard. There are others as well. This is literally home. They were born and raised here.
The interesting thing is there are no wolves. There were for a year or two some coyotes. The coyotes learned to prey on the cats allowed to stray around the neighborhood. Small dogs also disappeared. That caused an uproar that got rid of the coyotes
Thank you. Ranchers also kept wolf hounds for wolf hunts back in the days of Lobo Wolves in Texas.
