Elon Musk is making a sky-high prediction for artificial intelligence. The SpaceX CEO says computing will eventually move almost entirely off Earth.
“The amount of compute in space will obviously round up to 100% of all compute,” Musk wrote on X in response to a video about Google’s Project Suncatcher.
The project explores whether solar-powered satellites carrying Google’s AI chips could work together as an orbital data center. In the video Musk responded to, researchers describe satellites flying in tight formation and linking their chips to handle larger computing tasks.
The idea is still in the testing stage. Google has said it plans to launch two prototype satellites with partner Planet by early 2027 to test the hardware in orbit. The X post sharing the video claimed Google would launch chips on a SpaceX Falcon 9 next week, but Google’s published plan does not confirm that timeline. Google says the satellites could tap into near-constant sunlight to power AI chips. Its first planned test involves just two prototypes, leaving a long way to go before Musk’s vision of moving nearly all computing into orbit could become reality.

What could possibly go wrong?
I have to admit that this concept goes over my head. In more than one way.
AI and the string manipulationers behind it are beyond help.
The term that describes someone who is too stupid to realize the their own escapes me but I think this label is owned by AI.
Climbit change is on the menu for the ai and ai is jamming it in every subject.

And the good old English language is fighting back.
All these computer voice monologing our every listen are not able to discern the correct definition application of terms and words.
A live (meaning active or moving) load structurally speaking is not called a live ( where you stay at) load. So many more!!!!! Sheeeeeesh
But there is an opportunity here for the linguistically inclined ‘person’ to write the first dictionary strictly for the ai to use.
I doubt ai has enough sense to or to be able to use it because it is just a dictionary itself (the same) and requires application and reasoning.
What could possibly go wrong?
Musk knows more than me...but I cannot see how data centers could operate up there on a scale anywhere near what they do on the ground.
Just remember bullets go both directions and the number of satellites in orbit in this scenario would be in the 10s of thousands. Plus, with the launch capabilities that SpaceX is planning, replacing satellites could be done in short order.
Hopefully the US would have a President who would let any adversary know, any shoot down of a US satellite would mean one or more of your satellites would be shot down as well.

You couldn’t shoot down 10000+ starlink birds if you wanted too and have unlimited budget the task is simply to large and the birds can maneuver and change orbits on command.
That ship has sailed even if you took out a thousand birds which would bankrupt any country the other 9000+ will simple fill the gaps and not even flinch.
This is the 21st century things are fundamentally different now.
Space specificity sun synchronous orbits have 24/7 sunlight and only have very short periods where the earth shadow blocks the sun. They are above clouds and space is cold very cold as in 4K cold that’s four degrees above absolute zero cold. A radiator knife edge to the sun sees nothing but cold so cold molecular motion itself slows to a crawl.
The above two reasons are why AI computing is going to space , the sun is the engine of the whole system all every sources are a rounding error to the sun as in under 1% far under 1% the sun hits the earth will a million times what humans use in an hour. Elon is 100% right solar is the end game everything else is folly on a Exajoule scale if you don’t understand the basic units we cannot even have a rational discussion as you lack the ability to do so.

There won’t be 100% in space - data transmission etc would stall that. Plus we know that even with cloud functions, you still keep some on your local machine or server.

There are over 10000 starlink birds up, and an unknown number of the classified Starshield versions easily in the thousands by now as we see P8s and C130s already with Starsheild phased arrays on them and our American shahed drones have minis on them too they just release the photos and people don’t even notice the tech strapped to them in plain sight.
No adversary today could shoot down 10000+ birds no way no how no one has the boosters for it or the launch cadence and SpaceX sends up 20+ every other day really twice a week now. And when Starship goes orbital it will take 60+ of the V3 birds up that make V2s look like dial-up modems the new V3 DC will send 5G to your handheld from orbit everywhere all the time even in Antarctica or the North Pole they have the permits for 30000 birds and probably will be granted 60000 or more. You are not living in the 21st century this is a fundamentally different from last century.
China could not take down starlink let alone Starshield if they wanted too the numbers are too big. Starshipw puts up 150 tonnes that’s 150,000kg in payload each time it launches Starbase LA is being built with over a dozen launch pads for a once per HOUR or more launch cadence again you are not thinking 21st century when you start putting 150,000kg in orbit at the pace of aircraft take offs no one anywhere touches you. It’s total domination of the sky and that’s what Elon is doing not planning actively doing he is the richest human who has ever lived after all he just does its his autistic way.

Yes radiation is the only way and it’s very effective the hotter the radiator the better it sheds heat too.
The physicists have done the calcs you can put 150kW of AI chips on a starlink sized bird and knife edge the radiators to the sun or just use the backs of the solar panels you know the ones in a shadow only seeing 4K cold in the deep space direction.

There are no clouds in space that’s the whole plan.

As in laser cross links SpaceX is the world leader in that tech. Every starlink bird has laser cross links to every other starlink bird it forms the largest mesh network ever made all moving at 7+km per second the trackers keep a laser beam focussed on a dinner plate sized target thousands of kilometres away while both are moving 7 times faster than the fastest bullet. Again SpaceX is the dominant force in this field.
Those lasers allow for terabytes to flow from anywhere in the network to anywhere else at the speed of light having never touched a router or node on earth’s surface. Again You are not thinking like a SpaceX engineer they just do when Elon hands you a blank check and says make this happen. My former student Shaun works for Giga Austin he says exactly that Elon shows up says make this happen here is funding shown me results in 6 weeks or seek other work. It’s competitive but very effective. You can fail as long as the data you got shows how to fix the fail. Test to failure is the mantra SpaceX is the archetype of this.
Fiber optics and ground nodes are the bottleneck in space you have unlimited solar, 4K cold, and nothing in the way to limit your mesh network its free space path and zero clouds or aerosols to stop a laser beam carrying a huge data pipe , wait till they scale to UV lasers from IR at UV waves terabytes turn into Petabytes even Exabytes yeah this is where it’s heading. When a single laser beam can send in a few seconds the sun accumulated works of humanity as in the entire library of Congress or the Guttenberg project and you have 30000+ of those birds each with four or more laser links now you grasp the scale of what’s being built.
The super intelligence AI is formed in space where it has 24/7 access to the primary fusion engine of the whole solar system and unlimited 4K cold to keep from melting down. With such power and redundancy no one could possibly shoot it down and when the birds have argon ion engines with 1000km/for delta V they can move at will in orbits anyways it’s like the drone problem when your interceptor costs more than 20x the target you will bankrupt yourself before you hit them all and more keep coming.
Starship changes everything 150,000kg every shot and they plan on one per hour from Starbase LA , total domination is the correct terms.
