For most people of a political bent, the big takeaway from Jake Tapper's interview of Gavin Newsom while engaged in performative fly fishing together in Montana which was aired by CNN on Monday was Newsom's pledge to not run for president in 2028 if fellow Californian Kamala Harris decides to once again throw her hat into the presidential race. However, wildlife experts focused in on the inadvertent comedy entertainment provided by the cosplaying fly fishermen.
You can get a sense of just how hilarious such outdoorsmen found the duo by reading the opinions of a couple of them in Wyoming's Cowboy State Daily. Reporter Clair McFarland revealed on Wednesday why many real outdoorsmen found Newsom and Tapper's blatant act of performative fly fishing so awkward yet funny in 'C.J. LOL. I grew up fly fishing and noticed things immediately. One of them seemed to be biting on the “bug” on the end of the line like maybe he was going to attach a worm or cricket to the bug. Fly fishing is an art and when you try it the first day with no adult supervision, this is what you get. And I wonder if they were using top water or underwater lures? Or if they know the difference or even if they knew what they were using.
And did anyone check for their out of state fishing licenses?

How authentic is it meeting a New York urinalist and a California Governor in conservative Montana with a full film and sound crew.? I was born and raised in Cali in the high Sierras outside Tahoe. Some of the best fly fishing in the world. Who do they think they are fooling. And they think it works. What a bunch of phonies.

You do not cast directly downstream. The fish would see you and not react to whatever you threw at them. Those casts might go 20 feet at the most. Again, the fish see you.
