Ranked: Where Your Money Buys the Best Quality of Life in America

Where Americans Get the Most Quality of Life for Their Money

Key Takeaways:

Where can Americans get the most quality of life for their money? This graphic by Valerii Emelianov uses the Numbeo Quality of Life Index to compare 41 major U.S. cities after adjusting quality of life for living costs.

Numbeo’s broader index incorporates factors including purchasing power, safety, healthcare, climate, property prices, traffic, pollution, and cost of living. The result offers a different lens on livability: not simply which cities score highly, but where those benefits come at a lower cost.

U.S. Cities Where Quality of Life Goes Furthest

The table below ranks major U.S. cities by the quality of life received for every $100 of living costs, based on Numbeo data.

RankCityQuality of Life per $100 of Living Cost
1Tucson300
2Jacksonville297
3San Antonio295
4Omaha288
5Kansas City286
6Albuquerque285
7Raleigh283
8Austin281
9Tampa277
10Houston276
11Oklahoma City273
12Columbus272
13Indianapolis271
14Charlotte271
15Milwaukee270
16Fort Worth268
17Colorado Springs258
18Nashville256
19Minneapolis251
20Atlanta244
21Dallas242
22Sacramento236
23San Diego236
24Baltimore236
25Portland235
26Denver228
27Las Vegas228
28Boston225
29New Orleans216
30Phoenix215
31Philadelphia213
32Chicago213
33Detroit210
34Oakland210
35Seattle205
36Washington DC200
37San Jose198
38Miami192
39San Francisco182
40Los Angeles157
41New York134

Expensive coastal hubs cluster near the bottom of the ranking. San Jose scores 198, Miami 192, San Francisco 182, Los Angeles 157, and New York just 134.

Why the Gap Is So Large

Affordability is what reshuffles the ranking.

Cities with relatively strong quality-of-life scores can rise sharply once those scores are viewed against local living costs, while expensive metros can fall despite offering high incomes and amenities.

Finding the Right City

A good place to settle ultimately balances affordability with safety, healthcare, amenities, and personal preferences. Recent livability rankings increasingly give greater weight to housing and cost of living, reflecting how central affordability has become to decisions about where to live.

Higher earnings can expand your options, but location determines how much those earnings actually buy. The income associated with happiness also varies substantially by location, reinforcing the broader point that the best-paying city is not necessarily where your money buys the best life.

That’s one of the reasons retirees like it.

Short drive to Nogales, Sonora to buy cheap generic drugs.

And for the adventurous, Mexican “dentists” and “doctors” that charge about 1/5 what US side does for routine procedures.

“Mexican “dentists” and “doctors” that charge about 1/5 what US side does for routine procedures.”

My experience in Tijuana was about 40% of the Florida price for dental work.

Tucson is 300.

What is the maximum, maybe 1000?

If so,they are all losers.

And how does Portland get so high?

The corn analogy is actually the best way to understand this, but the key difference is SCALE and CHOICE.

If you grow corn in your garden, you have a private relationship with your neighbor. But imagine what happens if a giant international supermarket moves in next door:

Suppose it costs you $1 to grow an ear of corn, and you intended to sell it to your neighbor for $2.

Suddenly, a severe drought strikes major corn farms worldwide. The global market price for corn jumps to $5 an ear.

A representative from a global supermarket chain knocks on your door and says, “I will buy every single ear of corn you have right now for $5 each.”

Now, you have a choice:

Option A: Sell to your neighbor for $2 (and willingly lose $3 per ear in profit).

Option B: Tell your neighbor, “The global price is $5. If you want my corn, you have to pay $5, because that’s what the market is offering me.”

Because U.S. oil companies are private, profit-seeking businesses (not government charities), they choose Option B.

Your neighbor might get angry and say, “That’s unfair, I’ll just buy from someone else!”

However, because the drought is global, every other local corn grower is also getting offered $5 by global buyers. No one in town will sell to your neighbor for $2 anymore. If your neighbor wants corn, they have to pay the going market rate of $5, regardless of how cheaply it was grown down the street.

In this analogy….

The “Garden” is the U.S. Permian Basin: Drilling an oil well in Texas might cost only $40 a barrel.

The “Global Market” is World Demand: If a conflict in the Middle East threatens global supplies, European or Asian refineries will happily pay $90 a barrel to secure fuel.

The Result: The Texas oil producer will not sell their oil to an American refinery for $40 out of goodwill when a foreign buyer (or a competing domestic refiner matching global prices) will pay $90.

Even though the oil was pumped right out of American soil, its price is set by the highest bidder on the planet.

The only way to do it for $40 is for the US Government to go to the Texas oil producer and FORCE it to sell for lesser profit. Are you in favor of this government coercion?

Tucson?! My winter house is 25 miles south of Tucson. Tucson is a gawd awful place. Homeless encampments everywhere. I avoid going there after dark because it’s so dangerous.

“Tucson has the added advantage of being right next to the Mexican border.”

It also is facing a water problem. If it were not faced with this, I’d leave Left-O-rado in a heartbeat.

No one has mentioned, all of these are major cities.

For any who prefer small town or rural life, such people would reject all of these as places to live.

As far as how far your dollar goes in different places, just looking at that issue, many places in small town and rural America will be superior to any of these cities.

A quality suburb city would top much, if not all, of this list.

Tucson—my old hometown—has Thai restaurants!

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=tucson+thai+restaurants&t=h_&ia=web

It also is a “City of Gastronomy”, with a 4000-year-old history!

https://tucson.cityofgastronomy.org

https://tucsonfoodie.com

And there are plenty of arts events—although different from NYC.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Tucson+arts+events&t=h_&ia=web

The University of Arizona helps with this!

Housing is less expensive than in NYC, Boston, Los Angeles, SF/Silicon Valley, etc.

Traffic is much less oppressive than in any of those places.

The real problem is finding an appropriate job in Tucson. And one must learn to cope with the heat. When one learns how to do so, there are plenty of great outdoor activities that one cannot find in many other places.
