The order calls on a group of experts to meet and create, within two months, a guide for the state to strengthen its AI safety and security laws. Those enhanced laws may include a requirement for independent third parties to write safety plans for frontier AI companies, or mandating that companies develop a “kill switch” to shut down their models in case of emergency, according to an announcement from Newsom’s office.
While Trump has called fears of AI safety a “hoax,” Democrats have largely rallied around calls for stricter regulations. And those with presidential ambitions have been among the loudest voices in recent weeks.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has similarly called for “third-party” oversight of frontier models and stricter guardrails. Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., told Politico he’s introducing legislation to crate a fund paid for by AI companies that would support workers displaced by the technology. And Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., urged Trump to convene a special session of Congress to address AI risks.

Why would anyone believe Mr High Speed Rail?
Use AI to find Scammers and Waste , Oh Wait that would point right to Newsom ,LOL
Kickback to what remains of Hollywood.
Protecting Hollywood and the $$$$ they bring to the DNC is all they care about.
He still doesn’t get the whole “technology can be operated from anywhere thing”, does he. I nominated nate Newsom for Mayor of Dogpatch. That’s the one place where his policies might work, provided he doesn’t eat ALL the meat off of the Dogpatch ham, or get the Shmoos mad.
“Experts” means donors.
We might be able to balance the Federal Budget if we used AI to flush out the scammers and fraud in our welfare system, throw in the waste and fraud in the military and it wouldn’t be to hard to come up with at least a trillion dollars if not 2.
Newscum just proved the current wave of AI fear-mongering is a campaign for globalists to take exclusive control over it.
Because even a broken clock is right twice a day.
But AI needs safety guardrails due to the utter reckless of the TechBros rushing whatever gets them VC funding or an IPO out of the door, not because of AI actually understanding anything.
all AI companies should then move out of california as well as refuse to sell any companies IN california AI services or products ... or perhaps it would be sufficient to move out of california plus sell AI services on servers located outside of california ...
I’d be surprised if Newsom understood anything at all about AI.
“But AI needs safety guardrails due to the utter reckless of the TechBros rushing whatever gets them VC funding or an IPO out of the door, not because of AI actually understanding anything.”
sure ... as long as the ChiComs go along with that, which even if they SAY they would, they wouldn’t ...
Agreed. And “reign in” means regulate to make AI do the bidding of Dims.
Lol, first hollywood leaves, then silicon valley
bye bye silicon valley, hello austin
Exactly what do you mean by "safety guardrails?"
Is that just something you're parroting?
What a maroon. He is just looking to somehow find a way to be relevant.
Grabbin Newsom and California Democrats love telling everyone their state is the world’s fourth largest economy on their own, but they squeeze every penny they can from state taxpayers and every company doing business there!
He can’t read.
