Two new malaria cases have been registered this week near Frankfurt airport, two months after cases first emerged.
A person living near the Schwanheim district of Frankfurt died of malaria, local authorities said on Thursday. The incident is the third such death after a recent cluster of malaria cases linked to Frankfurt Airport emerged.
Two airport workers died of the disease in July and August.
Malaria is a life-threatening disease transmitted by mosquitoes and causes hundreds of thousands of deaths per year, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is not common in Germany.
Schwanheim district, which borders the airport, registered two new malaria cases on Tuesday this week. Neither of the two infected individuals, both living in different households, had previously visited a malaria-endemic area and they did not work at Frankfurt airport.
Frankfurt health authorities extended their condolences to the relatives of the latest victims and said the two latest cases in the Schwanheim district were linked to an infected Anopheles mosquito that arrived in Germany by plane.
Germany's public health institute, the Robert Koch Institute, said malaria mosquitoes can fly between 5 and 10 kilometers (3 to 6 miles). The registered infections occurred some 5 kilometers away from the airport.
What is airport malaria?
Malaria cases in Germany normally involve people who have contracted the disease while traveling abroad. But in this instance, the cases are attributed directly to Frankfurt Airport.
Airport malaria can occur when an infected mosquito is transported on an aircraft or in luggage and then infects someone on the plane, at the airport or in the immediate surrounding area.
The RKI describes such cases as very rare, with the last documented case at Frankfurt Airport having been recorded in 2023.
Because patients may not have traveled to a malaria-risk area, the disease can also be diagnosed later than usual.
Mosquito traps have been installed at the airport. Mosquitoes captured there are being genetically analyzed at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp to determine their species and origin.
Still, Frankfurt Airport urged employees at the airport to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.
Hans Schultz? Or Mohammed Hussein?
Correction: Was not common prior to Frau Merkel finishing her Stasi duties by leading the Germans to commit self-genocide through mass importation of third world savages.
“Airport malaria” is a thing? Who knew?
We flew into Frankfurt on our trip. Last Saturday, we stayed at the Marriott at Frankfurt airport the night before our Lufthansa flight home. I got a cold about 2/3 through our 20 day trip. I don’t think I have malaria.
A mile hike through Frankfurt airport have those little buggers plenty of time to bite me.
If a mosquito was in luggage, it likely would have gotten squashed.
If it was in the cabin, it would have gotten swatted.
If it was in unpressurized space in the aircraft, it would have exploded at high altitude.
I suspect a nasty person is trying to bring malaria to Germany.
Import Third World
Become Third World
Get checked out ASAP.
A friend of mine returned from a missionary trip to New Guinea and thought he had a cold and it was malaria. He damn near died................
Others can experience anemia, mild jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), an enlarged spleen or liver, and a faster breathing or heart rate. Severe disease can lead to coma or death and is a medical emergency. Young children, pregnant people, and travelers without prior immunity are at higher risk.
Seek medical care immediately if you develop fever or flu-like symptoms during or after travel to a malaria-endemic area (even up to a year later).
GIGO. Import trash people, yah get problems.
Saw a YTUbe video about malaria. Killed more people than anything except communism. Used to be all over US south. Killed thousands of kiddies — until US troops fighting Japs started dropping.
So, an international program wiped out malaria across the world, except in Africa. Why? ‘Cause central Africa has an especially virulent version of malaria and the entire continent lacks ports that allow ships to bring in stuff in bulk. THAT is why Africa is doomed, not colonialism. At least until anti-gravity is discovered.
