A California golden retriever apparently missed the memo on the whole guard dog thing.
A 90-pound pooch named Nash had an unexpectedly friendly reaction when a stranger allegedly broke into his family’s San Diego home, repeatedly bringing the intruder toys and seemingly trying to turn the bizarre break-in into playtime, per NBC 7.
The unusual encounter unfolded earlier this month in Sherman Heights, a neighborhood just east of downtown San Diego, while homeowner Dante Rowley and his family watched the surreal scene play out remotely through their home security app.
The stranger allegedly got into Rowley’s home near 20th and J streets by using a ladder to reach an open second-story window.

Two of the family’s three dogs were home, including Nash, their 4-year-old golden retriever who apparently saw the unexpected houseguest less as a threat and more as a potential new best friend.
Nash can be seen in the security video repeatedly approaching the stranger with a toy in his mouth, apparently hoping to get a game going.

Worst burglar, too.
I was walking through the parking lot of a supermarket, a while back, and I passed in between cars. I saw a golden retriever in the back of a car, eyeing me with a baleful look.
I am unable to pass a golden retriever without admiring the furry golden bundle of love, so I paused ever so slightly as I looked at the dog… And it launched itself at the window snarling at me!
I have to tell you, I was so utterly surprised and startled! It was absolutely the last thing I expected! Never had it happen to me before or since with a golden, but it was all teeth coming at me!
All three dogs we have had over the years would bark at strangers coming up to the house (if the dogs were in the house).
Two of them wouldn’t bark until they were on the steps up to the door. One of them would bark as soon as they set foot on the driveway. People could walk by on the sidewalk all day long and no barking, but set a foot on the driveway....
He was an Australian Shepherd. Super smart dog and friendly. I imagine if anyone broke in they all would have just barked a lot, unless the bad guy brought treats!
Sigh. We do love our animals. They brighten our lives.

All wolf mixes generally fail as guard animals.
They have no natural predators (typically) and so never really remain alert.
You’re lucky yours were well behaved. The ones I’ve dealt with have a serious dominance thing going on and needed far too firm a hand than I like to give an animal. Plus they’d do things like run off and kill neighbors’ animals.
What they are really luck about is that the cops didn’t shoot the dogs.
Well that one might pee on your leg . . .
I love how he waited with his ball for the police to come and play with him.
Geese also make great guard animals but best keep them out of doors.

My last dog was a lab and she instantly wanted everyone to be her fries. My dog now, Rhett, is half lab and half Chesapeake Bay. He barks ferociously but all my friends know that I’ll leave a treat in the porch. When I open the inner door he’s barking like a maniac behind the screen door they know to hold it up and say “Rhett, cookie!” He accepts the bribe and they’re admitted without further ado.
He really is quite a shameless sell out.
Maybe it felt vulnerable in the car...but the behavior is not usual in that dog.
Nash was getting the robber to expose himself to the camera from all sides.

A Boxer will protect mothers and children. I also believe they will protect the man of the house, but I haven't seen it like the mothers and children, that's a fact.
